A title in the University of Illinois Music In American Life series, A biography of bluegrass and country music legend Curly Seckler (1919-2017). A native of China Grove, North Carolina, he worked in a cotton mill as a young man, learning music from his parents (his father played the fiddle, harmonica, and autoharp and his mother taught him the organ) and from a neighbor, the mandolin. Seckler and his two brothers began their careers in 1935 performing daily on a local radio station; Curly was noticed by bluegrass legend Bill Monroe's brother and joined the Blue Grass Boys (at 20 bucks a week). In 1949, he joined Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, becoming a member of their band, the Foggy Mountain Boys. He sang tenor and played the mandolin. With a couple of breaks in the early 50s, Curly remained with Flatt & Scruggs until 1962. In 1973 Lester Flatt asked him to join the Nashville Grass Band, became its leader after Flatt's death in 1979 and remained with them through retirement. Curly Seckler was elected to the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2004.…
