This second edition of The Scientific Legacy of Beppo Occhialini takes us by the hand to appreciate the admiration if not the veneration he had for Patrick Blackett, the ironic rudeness of Lord Rutherford, or the troubled relationship with Cecil Powell. A particularly thorny aspect concerns the role played by some physicists during the Second World War and the way Occhialini elaborated the complex personal situations experienced by each of them. Occhialini?s memoirs are enriched by his short autobiography originally published as an encyclopedia entry in the 1970s. Finito di costruire intorno al 1640, il Cortile del Richini faceva parte dell'Ospedale che, già a partire dal 1400, fu voluto dagli Sforza e progettato dal Filarete. Nel corso dei secoli il complesso ospedaliero ha subito varie trasformazioni finché nel 1938 l'Ospedale si trasferì a Niguarda e iniziarono i lavori di ristrutturazione dell'edificio per adibirlo a sede dell'Università degli Studi di Milano. Gravemente danneggiato dai bombardamenti nel 1943, l'intero edificio venne restaurato (in parte ricostruito) e riadattato a sede universitaria nel 1951. Il volume è suddiviso in tre grandi sezioni: ricordare per conservare (la storia del Cortile monumentale della Ca' Granda, la sua nascita e rinascita), osservare per conservare (la campagna fotografica di Carlo Vannini che illustra, anche nei dettagli, le ottanta campate del Cortile) e indagare per conservare (le indagini su quattro campate campione per studiare le cause del degrado dei preziosi manufatti).
