During the war of the Spanish Succession, 1702 - 1713, merchants of several; nationalities and beliefs, English and Dutch protestants, Irish and Spanish Catholics, French Huguenots and Spanish and Portugese Jews, continued trading with one another although the counties where they lived were at war. Valentine Enys, a Cornishman, was part of this network of merchants and throughout the war, wrote letters to his friends in many parts of the country and the world: to London, Exeter, Bristol, Plymouth, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Lisbon, Livorno, Madrid, Jamaica, but above all to the Canary Islands where he had lived for many years before the war broke out and returning to live in Penryn. He specialised in importing Canary wines and in exchange sent out pilchards from Cornwall. He was also active in organising smuggling on the Packet ships which sailed from Falmouth to Lisbon. His letters contain much new information on the trade in pilchards, cloth, timber and tin and the history of the Packets. Above all they show the importance of Cornwall as a trading post, as a centre of intelligence and a stopping off place for ships coming from or about to sail into the Atlantic. The letters and the editor's notes will also be of interest to those researching Enys Family history. Very good except for minor damage to head of spine and slight wear to cover.
