His career followed a pattern familiar in the history of the United States - not quite the log cabin to the White…House, but almost. Humble birth, hard work, the desire for achievement and finally, wealth, public service and the presidency formed a progression recognizable in much of the national experience. There was continuity with the past also in the values Hoover acquired in his youth and which stayed with him through life. The great crisis of Hoover's life was the depression, which ironically began soon after he took office in 1929.
