Henry Cockton (7 December 1807 - 26 June 1853) was an English novelist, remembered primarily for The Life and Adventures of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist (1839 - 40). In 1839 Henry Cockton commenced writing The Life and Adventures of Valentine Vox the Ventriloquist. Published by Robert Tyas of London, in the monthly serial format, popularised by Charles Dickens, it was an immediate success, enjoying great popularity and acclaim. Illustrations by Thomas Onwhyn were a prominent feature of this. Valentine Vox teaches himself ventriloquism after seeing a performer in a local tavern, then uses his skills to create mayhem and mischief. Fearing this will lead him into trouble, his family send him to stay with his uncle Grimwood Goodman in London. This provides unlimited opportunities to perform pranks, such as disrupting political meetings, theatrical performances, educational lectures and social events. Ref HHH7. Thomas Onwhyn (ilustrador).

Half-Calf. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Viii pp + 387 pages and a 4 page publishers catalogue at the rear, with 24 steel engraved plates by Thomas Onwhyn and Auguste Hervieu, the plates somewhat foxed throughout, pages handled, title pages has a few light smudge marks, text clean in the main with some light offsetting and mark or two. contemporary half-calf with marbled paper boards, the boards rubbed with surface loss, calf also rubbed at extremes, octavo. *A social commentary on the inhuman and malicious and sanctimonious methods of factory work for children at this time, made into fiction. A vivid indictment of the working practices inflicted under the guise of benevolent Christian moral values and work ethic, but practiced (with perfect irony and callousness lost on the perpetrators) on the poor and ill-educated. A must read for any social reformer even today. 1840 *NOTE. The female author was the mother of Anthony Trollope and her work was on social reforms and helping the poor. Neglected somewhat today she influenced Harriet Beecher Stowe on her work of slavery and it was said of her "No other author of the present day has been at once so read, so much admired, and so much abused". Thomas Onwhyn & Auguste Hervieu. (ilustrador).

Hardcover. Condición: Poor. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition of the novel by Henry Cockton. Copiously illustrated by Thomas Onwhyn (see image of list), who in this publication signs himself as 'T. Onwhyn del;' short for T. Onwhyn delineavit - i.e Thomas Onwhyn drew this). Half leather boards with gilt decorated bands along the spine; gilt title set against red background. Both the boards and the spine are quite faded in places with rubbing of the cloth/leather in places; including at the book?s edges and corners. Condition (internal): generally tight binding although front pastedown/ffep hinge is slightly stretched (image). The major condition-related aspect of this book is the level of staining/marking/tanning on some of the pages; including on the 26 b/w plates (see image examples). It is for this reason that we have classified this book as in a poor condition - rather than for any structural issues and/or sections missing etc. pp. xvi, 270. 8vo (approx). Please note that, depending on destination, we may request a payment to cover any extra shipping & postage charges. Proceeds Condition Amnesty International. Abe2610. Thomas Onwhyn (ilustrador).

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Panorama. Cupid and Crinoline [Authors name not given but Attributed to Thomas Onwhyn] . published by Rock and Co. London. Not dated [1858] Panorama. Bound in original red boards with blue cloth spine. An Accordion folded strip, pasted joints after every second leaf. Attached to lower board of paper covered cardboard boards. Brick red coloured boards, illustrated with twelve hand coloured etched plates with text. COMPLETE. Rare panorama with typical Onwhyn humour, making fun of the contemporary fashion of large crinoline dresses. Twelve humorous scenes showing a lady in various predicaments caused by her very large crinoline dress. The verso of the front board has a engraved contemporary advert for 'W.H.J.Carter bookseller stationer', which has left a rectangle dent in the front board. Another engraved contemporary advert for the 'A Gentlemans Card Plate engraved . at Carters Stationer and Printseller, Regent Street' is printed on the verso of the first page; on the verso of the second page also has an engraved contemporary advert for the 'Theatre Royal Haymarket The Private Boxes'. These do detract from the panorama but the publisher had to make money as do newspapers who sell space for adverts today. The top right corner is missing throughout the panorama, possibly a hungry mouse. The Two sheets which had been detached have now been restored and are now professionally attached with Japon paper. The publishers, not to waste space have printed another engraved contemporary advert for 'W.H.J.Carter Carlton Library, Regent Street' printed on the verso of the last folding page. The last page folds out from the left to the right, the reverse to the norm and is sometimes missed. This is the similar as  'Mrs Caudle in Crinoline' which is also by Thomas Onwhyn. Also available for purchase from this website.A very nice copy of a scarce item. Folded size 15 x 15.5 cm [6 x 6.25 inches] Mrs Caudle was a figure of fun invented by Douglas Jerrold in 1845 that had her as a 'cantankerous, whining old busybody'. She would frequently appear as a stock figure of fun and would feature in Punch for many years, however Onwhyn ends his adaptation happily, unlike Jerrold's original on which it is based. Thomas Onwhyn. (ilustrador).

Hardcover. Condición: Good +. Panorama. Bound in original red boards with blue cloth spine. Inscription dated 1859 on verso of front cover. A Panorama of twelve hand coloured etched plates with text ,initialled 'TO', Thomas Onwhyn. COMPLETE. Rare panorama with typical Onwhyn humour, making fun of the contemporary fashion of large crinoline dresses. Twelve humorous scenes showing a lady in various predicaments caused by her very large crinoline dress. [A spoiler] The wife gives up her crinoline so her husband can be close to her. The characters originally come from Douglas Jerrold's Mrs Caudle Curtain Lectures. The boards are a little worn, as to be expected, rubbed with small pieces missing. I suspect this has been restored. The panorama laid onto a supporting sheets as two of sheets appear to have old 5cm marginal tears. The last two pages fold inwards. Scarce to find . Half Leather. Condición: Good binding. Octavo. xiv, [2], 609, [1] pp. Early issue of the volume edition. In later 19th century morocco spine and corners. 39 of the 43 illustrations are present as well as 26 of the 32 illustrations done by Thomas Onwhyn for E. Grattan. The binding is rubbed at the extremities; front joint is starting to separate but the board is holding fairly well; wear at the head of the spine; scattered foxing; early ink note on the front free endpaper incorrectly tallies the plate-count. Early owner name of Malcolm MacLaren / March 1898 on a preliminary blank, penciled underneath with a London address in perhaps a different hand. An interesting extra-illustrated edition with a mixture of issue points and states of plates. This copy is lacking plates 22, 33, 35, and 37. Present are the earlier versions of plate 10 and 11 etched by Buss. Dickens didn't care for the plates and they were redone by Browne fairly early. In addition to the plates that were done for the edition, this copy includes nearly all of the plates engraved by Onwhyn and brought out by E. Grattan in a "pirated" edition. An interesting copy of one of Dickens's most popular books. Eckel writes: "It is quite probable that only Shakespeare's Works, the Bible and perhaps the English Prayer Book, exceed 'Pickwick Papers' in circulation" Eckel, p. 17. Smith I, 3; Hatton & Cleaver, p. 3-22; Yale/Gimbel H1120.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. First Thus. ONLY KNOWN COPY IN PARTS - from the library of William Randolph Hearst. A very good set in the 17 original parts, green and yellow printed wraps (heavy wear, soiling, chips, tears, and some repairs to wraps, wear and soiling to edges of text). This is the only known copy of the Willoughby edition (ca. 1849) in parts. This copy sold at auction to Hearst at the Corder Joyce et al sale at A.A.A. in 1922, and in the Hearst sale at Hammer Galleries in 1941. Housed in a red cloth slipcase and folding chemise (slipcase lacks top edge with rubbing). Illustrated with 60 plates by Thomas Onwhyn. This bestellseing potboiler, first published by Tyas in 1840, sold some 400,000 copies in its era, but remains of note because for two reasons: 1) the central role in the narrative of ventriloquism, which makes it of interest to collectors of magic and the allied arts;and 2) the author's very direct attack, in the text and the Preface, on then-scandalous use of private lunatic asylums. PROVENANCE: From the collection of William Randolph Hearst. LAID IN LOOSE are letters of provenance from Hammer Galleries and Gimbel Brothers, together with the Hammer Galleries cataloging slip.
