5 1/2 in. x 8 1/2 in., frontispiece: engraved portrait of Henry Cockton (J. Welton, engraver, after a J. W. Childs' painting), engraved title-page, printed title-page: [i]-xvi, [1]-367 pp., with a total of 44 plates: 43 are engraved Thomas Onwhyn illustrations. The portrait is lacking the tissue guard; portrait & engraved title-page show some brown-spotting (foxing), slight tanning to the the other plates. Quarter-bound, with red polished calf spine, sides and corner-pieces, with five raised bands on the spine, brown leather title label with gilt title, floral gilt-tooled decorations in compartments, single-line gilt bordering to sides & corner-pieces; marbled paper-covered boards with matching endpapers, all edges are similarily marbled, headbands present. Spine shows some slight fading and rubbing, and rubbing to leather edges, front cover shows some of the marbled paper surface rubbed off; some page margins, plates show dusting, a few scattered spots. Henry Cockton's ten page preface concerns actual cases of somnambulism (sleepwalking), drawn from medical and historical sources; (it plays a part in this early Victorian novel).
