Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Medicine - Diagnostics, ( Atlantic International University ) (Science and Engineering), course: Health science, language: English, abstract: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) by Westergreen and Ziehl- Neelsen staining techniques were performed on 128 samples collected between January 2010 to November 2011 in the city of Porto Novo ,Cape Verde among whom 73(57%) were males and 55(43%) were females. 8(6.25%) were positive for tuberculosis with elevated ESR in all the eight samples. In all the samples, 77.3% showed elevated ESR without evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis and elevated ESR were influenced by age. In conclusion, ESR could serve as an important prognostic index but not a diagnostic index unless used in conjunction with other specific tests such as cultural techniques, nucleic acid probes and nucleic acid amplification using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). ESR left alone cannot serve as an important diagnostic index for tuberculosis since elevated results were recorded even in the absence of disease.KEYWORDS: Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate, Diagnostic index, pulmonary, Tuberculosis.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Medicine - Diagnostics, ( Atlantic International University ), language: English, abstract: Platelet counts and its associated indices of MPV, PDW and P-LCR were assayed in a total sample of 98 blood donors aged 19 to 55years here in Porto Novo. Among whom 47 were men(47.96%) and 51 were women (52.04%). The mean platelets count of 218.90 × 109/L were recorded among men samples while Platelet count of 247.8 × 109/L were recordedamong women blood donors. The platelet count were slightly higher in women than men and this increase is not statistically significant (P=0.01). The indices of platelets, MPV, PDW and P-LCR were also variable among both men and women, again these are notstatistically significant (P=0.01).Conclusion: The present study showed that platelet count are gender dependent and platelet indices should be paid attention to when diagnosing thrombocytopenia. The routine hematologic autoanalyzers should incorporate reticulated platelet absolutely necessary for the accurate assessment of marrow response to thrombocytopenia.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Scientific Study from the year 2013 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, Atlantic International University, course: Health Science, language: English, abstract: A hundred and twenty-seven (127) pregnant women performed high vaginal swab (HVS) tests between the months of May to July, 2013, the age range of the pregnant women studied were from 13 to 45 years old. The specimen were studied for candida species and trichomonas vaginalis infections using wet mount or direct examination sometimes using10% Potassium hydroxide (KOH) , and gram stain techniques were applied to all the samples. They results of 21.26 % was obtained for candida species, while 6.3% was infected with trichomonas vaginalis. The study observed that the infection rate of candida species among the pregnant women was statistically significant to that of trichomonas vaginalis, considering P 0.05. The co-infection rate (the infection of candida species and trichomonas vaginalis together) of the study was 0.79%. The primigravidae recorded 59 (46.46%) and multigravidae recorded 68 (53.54%), the infection of candida species of 28.8% was observed among primigravidae, while trichomonas vaginalis was 10.17%, also among primigravidae, the multigravidae registered 14.71% of candida species infection and trichomonas vaginalis was 2.94%. Therefore, the primigravidae were more infected with candida species and trichomonas vaginalis than multigravidae. The age groups of 13 to 25 years of the pregnant women were mostly infected by candida species (25.93%) and trichomonas vaginalis infection was 7.41%.
