Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The humble organic materials of straw, hay and rushes were utilised throughout the centuries in Ireland for a myriad of uses. The heyday of their use as objects were the 18th and 19th centuries, when travellers to Ireland often wrote disparaging and derogatory accounts of what they saw saddles of straw, sleeping on rushes, restricting animals with tethers and spancels of bark and animal hair, and wearing crudely-made straw and rush hats. Yet the people who produced and utilised these objects were both ingenious and thrifty, making use of what they could find at no cost and using their learned skills to make objects which we now see as having not only function, but also beauty.Anne ODowds powerful and lavishly illustrated work looks at the historical context of the making of a wide range of useful and ceremonial objects, and the folklore of belief and custom connected with the materials and practices. The thousand or so objects made from straw, hay and rushes in the National Museum of Irelands Irish Folklife Collection are the foundation of the study. The book is beautifully illustrated with colour and black and white images, and presents a fascinating insight into Irish crafts and rituals and their ancient origins. Fully illustrated history of everyday rural Irish life, based on the National Museum of Irelands collection of straw, hay and rushes. A fascinating insight into Irish crafts and rituals, Anne ODowd uncovers a unique history of folklore and tradition in the creation and use of objects made from humble organic materials. "[Anne O'Dowd's STRAW, HAY AND RUSHES IN IRISH FOLK TRADITION] joins an elect pantheon of gargantuan works of research which survey the most significant areas of Irish tradition - such as, to name a few, Maire Mac Neill's THE FESTIVAL OF LUGHNASA, Patricia Lysaght's THE BANSHEE, Daithi Ó hÓgáin's AN FILE, Anne O'Dowd's SPALPEENS AND TATTIE HOKERS, a history of the migratory agricultural worker in Ireland and Great Britain. These are all big books based on years or decades of research, which provide invaluable overviews of key aspects of life - veering towards the descriptive rather than the theoretical, their longevity is assured. Theories change; evidence on the whole does not, especially evidence researched by scholars with high standards of accuracy, such as O'Dowd … There are fewer of these eminently useful classics than one might suppose, and several crucial subjects have not been covered in the depth which they deserve, if a published history of Irish culture is a desideratum. But it takes time and much work to produce volumes of this kind. Two of the great books have been written by O'Dowd. What more need one say? Except perhaps this: she has made a lasting contribution to the sum of our knowledge about our country and the skills of its people. We should be very, very grateful." - Éilís Ní Dhuibhne in THE IRISH TIMES. Oversize book may require additional shipping.…
