Añadir al carrito24 pp. The back wrapper presents an early American census, namely, "A Return of the Number of Inhabitants in the State of Connecticut, February 1, 1782; and also of Indians and Negroes." The census is summarized by the six counties and is further broken down by males above 50, males between 16 and 50, males under 16 and females. Other interesting content includes a recipe for "The Poor Man's Medicine," which is made by boiling quicksilver in water. Use both internally and externally. Consult attorney as needed. Evans, American Bibliography: 17732. Drake, Almanacs of the United States: 353. Not in O'Neal, Early American Almanacs. Rather heavy age darkening and soiling, particularly to front and rear printed wrapper. Two inch tear into front wrapper. The verses at the top of the calendar pages for July through December ("The Amiable Virgin") have been torn out, perhaps by an early household censor. The missing (and not shocking) text is supplied in Readex facsimile. Old ink marginalia on several pages.

Añadir al carritoA well-kept Hartford Bickerstaff almanac from the last year of the Confederation period. Although Evans attributes this almanac to Benjamin West of Providence, the Hartford Bickerstaffs from 1785 and on are generally attributed to Rev. Nehemiah Strong, Yale's first professor of Mathematics and Natural Science. Strong, fed up with rumors attributing Bickerstaff almanacs to himself and dismissive of their quality, seems to have decided to simply take the name for his own in Hartford. Along with the usual calendars and notices, including a small woodcut of "Mercury wholly on the Face of the Sun", are several bits of prose including "The Beer-Barrel", "On Laziness", and "On ugliness." The titlepage bears the contemporary signature of one Enoch Peirce, a native of Massachusetts who followed his parents and most of his family to Mansfield, Connecticut in the 1730s. DRAKE 427. EVANS 21590. ESTC W25547. Small octavo. Gathered signatures, recently re-stitched. First and last pages slightly soiled. Contemporary ownership inscription to titlepage. Many small perforations near gutter from repeated re-stitchings over the years, none touching the text. Moderately tanned, but all in all a good, clean copy. Very good.

Añadir al carritoA very clean copy of this 1792 almanac, calculated by Yale's first Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. In addition to the usual calendars and notices, this year's almanac contains a handful of moral and humorous prose snippets and jokes, including the story of "The Two Bees" and a short paragraph lambasting a student for his "inelegant" pronunciation of Vergil (i.e. with a W). The illustration is of a projected eclipse. DRAKE 479. EVANS 23806. ESTC 25537. Small octavo. Gathered signatures, recently re-stitched. Text a bit faded throughout, particularly the final page, and a few minor stains in places. Small tear into edge of leaf Bb1. Overall remarkably clean and bright. Very good plus.

Añadir al carritoAside from the usual calendars and notices accompanied by brief snippets of verse, this almanac contains a several-page "Dialogue between Rusticus and Academicus" and a brief moral story titled "The Striking Fate of Guilt." The present copy also contains contemporary manuscript notes in ink calculating the total distance of a trip from Hartford to Charleston by way of Philadelphia and Williamsburg. ESTC notes two states of this revolutionary-era almanac; this is the state with "Hartford" set in italic type on the titlepage and which begins the verso with "Eclipses." "Except for the imprint and the second line of the title, the state of the present almanac with 'Eclipses' at the head of p. [2] is identical in content and typography with THE NEW-ENGLAND ALMANACK for the year of our Lord 1781.by the professor of mathematicks in Yale-College (Worcester : Anthony Haswell)" - ESTC. EVANS 17003. DRAKE 335. ESTC W25564. Small octavo. Gathered signatures, stitched. Slight foxing and toning, heavier to titlepage. Minor edge wear without loss to text. Titlepage with large chip in lower right edge (minor loss of text of verso), two small tears in lower edge which touch text without affecting legibility. Interior otherwise clean. Good.

NAIP notes two states of gathering A: this one has the imprint 'Hartford' in Roman type rather than italics, and begins page [2] with 'Astronomical Notes.' The almanac features 'A Dialogue between Rusticus and Academicus,' much astronomical data, and a table of distances. Evans 17003. Drake 335. Trumbull 76. ESTC W25564.

Añadir al carritoA very clean and well-maintained copy of this scarce Connecticut almanac from the early Confederation period. Strong, a Yale graduate who became the college's first professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy in 1770, was Connecticut's most famous publisher of almanacs under a variety of pseudonyms in the late 18th century. His almanac for 1783 was the first to be published with his own initials; while something of an open secret, this almanac for 1784 was the first to directly reference the author by name. In addition to the usual calendars and notes, this almanac contains a two page introduction by the author explaining the basic science of eclipses as well as a "Chronology of memorable events", beginning with the creation of the world and including a number of events from the American revolutionary period, ending with "General Cornwallis defeated at York-Town." EVANS 18201. DRAKE 361. ESTC W25519 12mo. Gathered signatures, recently re-stitched. First and last pages somewhat soiled, interior lightly foxed but otherwise clean. A very good copy.
