Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. An archive consisting of three notebooks containing diary entries, artwork, poetry, and general musings written with other ephemera by a woman from 1927 to 1942 totaling approximately 63,000 words. Two black leather octavo ring binder books measuring 6.5" x 9". 276pp. and 68pp. And one green patterned cloth octavo notebook measuring 5" x 8". 125pp. Four black and white photographs measuring between 2" x 1.5" and 10" x 8". Also including a 7" x 5" canvas painting of a dog. The notebooks have some rubbing and wear to the spine ends and corners, very good with near fine pages. All other items are fine. An archive of poems, journal entries, sketches, and photographs belonging to Molly Bond Hanford of West Chester, New York during her time as a college student at Marot Junior College in Windham, Connecticut and later when she returned home to New York. Hanford was a member of the Scarsdale Unit of the New York Junior League and studied at the Naum Los School of Sculpture. Her sketches and pastel works are mostly of women, sometimes nude, often accompanying a poem. One particular pencil illustration with pastel highlights details is of the actor, Robert Donat, accompanied by a short poem to him: "I sit here listening to the wind.Oh dear god to hear his footsteps in the hall. But that's just another futile wish of mine after all." This is just one of the poems in a 276 page handmade book titled *Carpe Diem* that Hanford created with an illustration of a woman dancing while holding a candle burning on both ends on the first page and a silhouette portrait appears on the second. The poems are a collection of Hanford's original poetry as well as some by her friends, with a few poems of the written in French. The accompanying diary was kept by Hanford during 1935. In it, she mostly discusses her suitors with further captioned notes written sometime after the original entry, commenting on her earlier behavior: "I was such a fool". Most of the entries are about "Pete R." and her struggles to date him: "So you won't write, huh? How sweet of you - you really have no idea how I miss those sweet letters. You won't get a yip out of me." There is very little talk about her friends except for her laments over her younger friends getting married. Eventually Hanford does marry in 1943 to Lieutenant James T. Northrop, U.S.N.R. On the art pieces included, Hanford has signed with her maiden name, Northrop, or Francisco. It is unknown to us if she remarried later or adopted "Francisco" as part of her name. She also signs some of the poems as Neale Gordon, apparently her pen name. The photographs include pictures of Hanford with her dogs, several printed postcards of a dog painting, as well as a canvas painting of a dog, and a couple of photos of dog and horse illustrations. An interesting and extensive archive consisting of original poetry and artwork by a young woman living in New York during the late 1920s through to the 1940s. …
