Functional textiles were used in everyday subsistence and helped the settlements' inhabitants carry out tasks that were indispensable in the context of a sedentary lifestyle. In this context, the question arises as to what extent sedentariness would have been possible without textiles, simply because there is no other material that is as versatile as textile raw material. This particular topic was part of the joint project "THEFBO: Textile craftsmanship in the prehistoric wetland settlements on Lake Constance and Upper Swabia - requirements for textiles and their perception". The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 2019 to 2021 and coordinated by the Landesamt fur Denkmalpflege im Regierungsprasidium Stuttgart. Results of the project will be presented in THEFBO volume I / Forschungen und Berichte zur Archaologie in Baden-Wurttemberg 27. Part of this project was an online conference from 24th-26th February 2021, the proceedings of which are presented in THEFBO volume II. It dealt with textile findings and raw materials from a dendrological, paleobotanical, textile-archaeological and cultural-historical perspective. The broad spectrum of topics gave insights into the wide range of technical textiles in prehistory. Some of the oldest and most outstanding textile finds such as early Holocene tree bast strings, ropes, and nets from Friesack 4 in Brandenburg or the strings and bags from the wells of the Early Neolithic Linear Pottery Culture were presented and discussed at the conference. Other case studies considered Neolithic basketry and cordage in the Iberian Peninsula, Neolithic and Bronze Age textiles and tools from Northern Italy, textile tools and imprints on clay sealings from Bronze Age Greece to prehistoric objects made of plant fibres and wool from ice patches in the Bernese Alps, Switzerland. Contributions discussing the distribution of Lime trees (Tilia spec.) in prehistoric European landscapes, experimental approaches to manufacturing prehistoric threads or aspects of textile terminology completed the conference. This phase is very patchily researched, partly also because certain kinds of evidence, notably domestic architecture and burials, are rare or absent in many regions. This has occasionally been interpreted as signs of a major crisis and population bottleneck, which in turn facilitated the migration of new populations from the steppe, bringing with them amongst others new economic regimes, ideologies and settlement patterns.Research over the last few years has shown that this scenario needs to be nuanced. Although evidence remains scattered, a picture of regional diversity is emerging, with probably mobile but well-connected Late Neolithic societies undergoing social changes of their own, and instituting several key innovations long before the appearance of the Corded Ware. This volume offers a selection of such case studies, comprising amongst others an overview over the steppe background of new mortuary practices, contributions on settlement and changing networks in Switzerland, Poland and several regions of Germany, as well as discussions on the spread of pottery innovations and lithic material, the possible effect of droughts on Late Neolithic societies, new patterns of monumentality and figurative expression, the social role of battle axes, networks of influences visible in burial rites, and the possibility for parallel societies with different modes of life. An introductory chapter draws out central themes.Together, these contributions show that the transition to the Corded Ware culture was a diverse and multi-facetted process, with many continuities across the transition. This book showcases the diversity of the pre-Corded Ware horizon in central Europe and adjacent regions, with emphasis on the continuities to later periods. Systematische Ausgrabungen dieses neolithischen und bronzezeitlichen Gräberfeldes fanden von 19771996 durch das archäologische Denkmalamt Schleswig-Holsteins statt. 35 neolithische Fundstellen, sieben Langbetten und 14 andere Grabhügel mit insgesamt 29 megalithischen Grabkammern und 32 nicht-megalithischen Gräbern wurden von Doris Mischka bearbeitet. Aufgrund der 14C-Datenserie zum Bau der Gräber gelang es für die Trichterbecherkulturen, das gesamte Gräberfeld vergleichend zu untersuchen. Es zeigte sich, dass erst ab dem 38. Jh. v. Chr. in Flintbek kontinuierlich Gräber angelegt wurden. Im Verlauf des Frühneolithikums bis ca. 3300 v. Chr. entstanden vor allem Langbetten und Rundhügel mit unterschiedlichen Dolmenkammern; im anschließenden Mittelneolithikum werden Ganggräber typisch. Im Frühneolithikum wurden neben Dolmen auch nicht-megalithische Gräber vor allem in die Langbetten integriert. Ein Langbett konnte sowohl mit einer nicht-megalithischen als auch mit einer megalithischen Grabkammer angelegt und dann sukzessive vergrößert werden. Während beispielsweise das Langbett LA 4 als Megalithgrab begann, wurde 100 Jahre später das benachbarte Langbett LA 3 mit mehreren nicht-megalithischen Gräbern begründet und erst anschließend um vier Dolmenkammern erweitert. Flintbek LA 3 spielt darüber hinaus aufgrund der durch den Grabhügel konservierten Wagenspuren, die präzise um 3400 v. Chr. zu datieren sind, in der Diskussion zur Erfindung von Rad und Wagen eine wichtige Rolle. Die unter mehreren Langbetten nachgewiesenen Pflugspuren gehören zu den ältesten Belegen für den Einsatz von Hakenpflügen in Europa.
