hardcover w/ dj. Condición: Sehr gut. 200 Seiten From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - very good and clean copy! - From the preface: Every undergraduate who takes a course in Reformation history comes to know Silvestro Mazzolini da Prierio's name (in at least the toponymic form, Prierias) because he was Luther's first literary opponent. Yet, very few teach- ing such a course are themselves likely to know much more about him than that. I hope that this work will fill this lacuna. I did not come upon Silvestro principally through Luther, but while researching a topic in the history of philosophical logic. Silvestro played a significant part in the Renaissance Thomist debate on the nature of first and second intentions and allied issues-a debate that I shall con- sider in detail elsewhere. While attempting to put together a brief bio- bibliographical footnote, I soon discovered that there was no satisfactory account of Silvestro's life and works. The only attempt turned out to be Franz Michalski's very brief De Sylvestri Prieratis. vita et scriptis. (Münster, 1892). I also became aware, to my dismay, that Michalski's work, though by no means unsympathetic to Silvestro, is almost entirely unreli- able. Yet, since its publication there has been an interminable, uncritical repetition of its contents. . ISBN 9780822319764 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 540.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Italian Dominican friar Silvestro Mazzolini da Prierio (14561527), known as Prierias, is chiefly remembered as the church official designated to respond to Luther's 95 theses of December 1517-a response blamed for fanning the flames of the Reformation throughout Europe. In Prierias, Michael Tavuzzi presents the first full biography of this little-known, yet eminent, sixteenth-century ecclesiastic, as well as an account of his wide-ranging literary works. Tavuzzi shows that, aside from being Luther's first opponent, Prierias played a key role in significant early-sixteenth-century controversies such as the cases of Reuchlin, Erasmus, and Pomponazzi. Drawing on previously untapped primary sources, Tavuzzi traces Prierias's early career as preacher, professor, inquisitor, and administrator, and places him in the context of the struggles fought between unreformed and observant friars during the Renaissance. Prierias's activities as Master of the Sacred Palace, his long-standing and bitter conflict with Cardinal Cajetan, and especially his forceful writings warning against the threat of witches and witchcraft are also described. Focusing closely on Prierias's clash with Luther, Tavuzzi accounts for its development and illuminates the ecclesiological issues at stake. Prierias reveals the little-known world of the friars on the eve of the Reformation.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - During the Renaissance there was no centralized Inquisition in northern Italy until Pope Paul III founded the Roman Inquisition in 1542, but there was a dense network of autonomous papal inquisitors. Based on extensive archival research, this study investigates the life of the Dominican friars from whom these inquisitors were mostly drawn. It focuses on a selection of hitherto almost unknown but representative inquisitors to cast new light on their formation, appointment and careers, as well as their principal pursuits - the prosecution of heretics, especially Waldensians and Judaizers, and, most of all, the hunting of witches, for it was at its most intense in northern Italy during the Renaissance, over a century before reaching its peak in Northern Europe.…
