Paperback. Condición: New. Critical conversations and reflections about lessons learned at the intersection of social movements and artist production. Diversity of Aesthetics collects powerful and timely conversations among leading cultural critics, artists, and organizers to connect the threads between some of the most pressing social struggles and conflicts of our time: policing, war, borders and migration, economic crisis. Across three themes-infrastructure, migration, and riots-militant thinkers, artists, educators, and others discuss aesthetic production, forms of social organization, modes of struggle against gendered and racialized capitalism, and revolutionary theory. Common to all three conversations is a commitment to rethinking the relationship between forms of critique and forms of struggle undertaken by collective social practices, offering lessons for tactics, strategies, and practices.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. An artist charts the historical context and aftermath of a concert-by Leonard Cohen at the Ramallah Cultural Palace in Palestine-that never happened.Michael Rakowitz's project I'm good at love, I'm good at hate, it's in between I freeze (2009-ongoing) charts the historical context and aftermath of a concert that never happened. In 2009 Leonard Cohen was scheduled to perform in Israel. Because of increasing pressure from pro-Palestinian voices to dissuade Cohen from performing in Israel, a twin event in Palestine was organized. Amid protests and claims that the latter concert was a token show of solidarity and a hollow attempt to appease demonstrators, the concert was boycotted and eventually canceled. But the story, as Rakowitz's work demonstrates, did not end there. Conjoining the cultural histories of Palestine and Israel with the ethical dilemmas faced by performers under the conditions of a boycott, this volume, the first in the Research/Practice series, brings to light the research that went into this multifaceted work and plots the future arc of its trajectory. An artist charts the historical context and aftermath of a concert--by Leonard Cohen at the Ramallah Cultural Palace in Palestine--that never happened. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Prominent Iraqi-American artist-provocateur Michael Rakowitz invites forty acclaimed chefs and food writers to create mouthwatering savoury and sweet dishes using date syrupDate syrup has been central to Iraqi cooking and home life for centuries. In this unique book, a fusion of the worlds of contemporary art and food, an artist and forty celebrated chefs present delicious dishes using this staple of Middle Eastern cuisine. Their collaboration had its roots in early 2018, when Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz unveiled a winged bull sculpture made from thousands of date syrup cans as the latest commission for the Fourth Plinth in London's Trafalgar Square. As his winged bull sat upon the Fourth Plinth, Rakowitz invited chefs from around the world to create new and classic recipes using date syrup as a way to celebrate this ancient ingredient and symbol of Iraqi culture. Pioneering chefs and food writers including Yotam Ottolenghi, Alice Waters, Claudia Roden, Reem Kassis, Prue Leith, Mourad Mazouz, Jason Hammel, Nuno Mendes, Thomasina Miers, Giorgio Locatelli and Marcus Samuelsson responded to his call by creating dozens of dishes. Their recipes range from the traditional to the innovative in a feast for the taste buds, and include everything from simple brunch dishes, salads and sides to mouth-watering mains, cakes, desserts, drinks and condiments. Easy step-by-step instructions enable the reader to make the recipes at home.Beautiful photographs of the dishes are accompanied by the artist's portrait drawings and sketches of the food. Completing the volume is a foreword by awardwinning food writer and chef Claudia Roden and an appreciation of the importance of the date in Iraqi society by Iraqi-American cultural-studies academic Ella Shohat, while Rakowitz writes about the significance of the syrup to his family and in his work. This special book will appeal to anyone who loves the cuisine of the Middle East and the politics of food in that troubled region. Prominent Iraqi-American artist-provocateur Rakowitz invites 40 acclaimed chefs and food writers to create mouthwatering savory and sweet dishes using date syrup. Date syrup has been central to Iraqi cooking and home life for centuries. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardback. Condición: New. On a sculptural recreation of a room from an ancient Iraqi palace, in the wake of lootings by Western archaeologists and ISISPublished with Wellin Museum of Art.Using Arab-language newspapers and wrappers from food products imported from the Middle East, Iraqi American artist Michael Rakowitz (born 1973) has recreated to scale Room H from the Northwest Palace of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud (Kalhu). Part of a reception suite, Room H was originally lined with seven-foot-tall carved stone reliefs, including an inscription detailing Ashurnasirpal II's achievements and winged male figures, many of which have been removed by Western archaeologists over the last 150 years. Here, Rakowitz has "reappeared" only those panels that were in situ in Room H when the remains of the palace were destroyed by the jihadist group the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2015. Areas from which the reliefs had already been removed by 19th-century archaeologists are left blank, resulting in what Rakowitz calls "a palimpsest of different moments of removal.".
