Aber Massenkultur ist nicht nur 'Kulturindustrie'. Massenkultur ist vielmehr das Medium moderner Erfahrung. Deshalb ist sie für moderne Gesellschaften von transzendentaler Bedeutung. Entscheidend für diese Erfahrung sind die artifiziellen Wirklichkeiten, die im 20. Jahrhundert aus der Synthese von Technisierungs- und Ästhetisierungsprozessen entstanden sind. Massenkultur - so lautet die These der Studie - verleiht ihrer prinzipiellen Möglichkeitsoffenheit jene unbezweifelbare Selbstverständlichkeit, die sie zum funktionellen Prinzip moderner Lebenswelten macht. Massenkultur ist damit eine 'Kontingenzkultur'. Sie setzt voraus, daß das, was ist, auch anders möglich ist. Aber sie problematisiert die relative Unbestimmtheit nicht als Unsicherheit, sondern positiviert sie als Voraussetzung konstruktivistischer Freiheit. Aus diesem Grund ist Massenkultur auch keine restringierte Kultur. Sie ist vielmehr die Kultur des generalisierten 'Möglichkeitssinns'. Allerdings realisiert sich dieser 'Möglichkeitssinn' nur im Medium seiner kommunikativen Normalisierung. Eine 'Normalisierungsgesellschaft' ist deshalb die soziale Dimension der massenkulturellen Möglichkeitsoffenheit. Ihr funktionelles Prinzip ist wettbewerbsförmige Optimierung in einer universellen Struktur der standardisierten Anschlußfähigkeit. Und Massenkultur wird damit zur genuinen kulturellen Form des gesellschaftlichen, in performativer Immanenz gegründeten Zeitalters. Massenkultur - so ließe sich die These der Studie deshalb kritisch wenden - ermöglicht die Universalisierung individueller Selbstentfaltung, indem sie diese unauflöslich an soziale Anschlußfähigkeit bindet. Man mag darin die einzige Form von Freiheit sehen, die wirklich verallgemeinerbar ist. Aber man könnte hier auch von einem neuen, nicht politischen, sondern gesellschaftlichen, nämlich dem kommunikativen Typ der Unfreiheit sprechen.…
