Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Only a space limitation of 115 seats prevented this First International Symposium on Acoustical Holography from having an attendance of over 250. Unfortunately, the size of the auditorium of the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories required that…attendance be by invitation only, and many deserving and interested scientists could not be present. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium, and hopefully will help compen sate those individuals who were unable to attend. The symposium itself consisted of sixteen formal papers. The seven teenth, by Dr. P. Greguss, was not received in time to be read but is included in these proceedings. The presence of Professor Dennis Gabor considerably enhanced the informal sessions, which frequently became as spirited as one might expect in a new field. Dr. H. M. A. El-Sum, a consultant to the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories and a pioneer in the field of holography, set the stage with the first paper. He provided a general introduction to the physical principles and practical methods involved in optical and acoustical holography. His paper also included a summary of various specific techniques currently used in sound holography, with the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations involved for each approach.

The symposium was sponsored by the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories, M…cDonnell Douglas Corporation, and the Acoustical Society of America. Twenty papers were presented and these each appear as a chapter in this volume. The chapters are grouped into five sections. The sections are I Medical and Biolog ical, II Bragg Imaging, III Nondestructive Testing, IV Underwater and Long Wavelength, and V Theory and Methods. The reader is cautioned only to use the sec tional titles as a rough guide. For instance, the reader interested in new methods should not just read section V since he will find a new liquid surface relief method de scribed in chapter lOin section III. In an effort to reduce the time delay between the meeting and the publication date, the publishers have pro duced this volume using the shoot-from-manuscript method instead of the mote time consuming typesetting method that was used on the previous volumes. As a result there may be differences in notation and definitions used for one chapter to another. However this should not cause con fusion since all symbols and definitions are stated in each chapter. There has been a large emphasis on Array Technology as well as Underwater Applications, Seismic Applications, Transducers, New Methods, Acoustic Microscopy, Non-destructive Testing, Computer Tomography Techniques, Medical Applications as well as Tissue Characterization. The meeting was a great success and a stimulating experience for all concerned due principally to the enthusiasm and contrib utions of all of the authors represented here.
