A spectacular medieval town of 100,000 residents, Arezzo invites travelers to see its sights and sample its considerable charms. The authors and photographers featured here are kindred spirits - Americans, Europeans, students, and scholars - all touched by Arezzo's magic and eager to share their experience with newcomers.Buon Giorno, Arezzo sketches the city's unique history, from ancient Italy to the present day, with beautifully illustrated forays into its rich tradition of architecture and art - including the masterwork of Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca. Contributors offer insight into Arezzo's language, introducing visitors to speech patterns and accents harking back to the Etruscans, as well as distinct dialects that put the region - the birthplace of Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch), a godfather of the Italian language - at the very ""center of the Italian language universe."" Italians are known internationally for their contributions to music, fashion, film, and wine - and Arezzo's significant influence in each of these areas comes to light and life as the authors explore the city's vibrant modern culture and economy. A congenial companion and knowledgeable guide, steeped in history and replete with photographs of Arezzo's visual delights, Buon Giorno, Arezzo is an essential resource for any traveler hoping to immerse themselves in the daily rhythms and cultural depths of this incomparable Italian city. Inscription on the half-title page signed by Zach Messitte. Inscription reads 2/10/22 To Mark-- Here's to better Vice Presidents an…d politics in the years ahead! Zach Messitte. Chuck Holden has taught at St. Mary's College of Maryland since 1999. His books include: In the Great Maelstrom: Conservatives in Post-Civil War South Carolina (2002) and The New Southern University: Academic Freedom and Liberalism at UNC (2011). He is also a co-author on Republican Populist: Spiro Agnew and the Origin of Donald Trump's America (2019). His op-eds have appeared in The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, The Charlotte Observer, the Des Moines Register. and the History News Network. Zachariah Paulo Messitte (born June 24, 1968) is an American political scientist, commentator, author, and academic administrator. He served as the 13th president of Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin from 2012-2022. He is currently an Executive Director in the Social Impact and Education unit at Russell Reynolds Associates. Jerald Podair is a professor of history and the Robert S. French Professor of American Studies at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he's taught since 1998. His research interests have focused on 20th century American urban history and racial and ethnic relations. Typically a maligned figure in American political history, former vice president Spiro T. Agnew is often overlooked. Although he is largely remembered for his alliterative speeches, attacks on the media and East Coast intellectuals, and his resignation from office in 1973 in the wake of tax evasion charges, Agnew had a significant impact on the modern Republican Party that is underappreciated. It is impossible, in fact, to understand the current internal struggles of the Republican Party without understanding this populist "everyman" and prototypical middle-class striver who was one of the first proponents of what would become the ideology of Donald Trump's GOP. Republican Populist examines Agnew's efforts to make the Republican Party representative of the "silent majority." Under the tutelage of a group of talented speechwriters assigned to Agnew by President Richard Nixon including Pat Buchanan and William Safire, Agnew crafted the populist-tinged, anti-establishment rhetoric that helped turn the Republican Party into a powerful national electoral force that has come to define American politics into the current era. A fascinating political portrait of Agnew from his pre-vice presidential career through his scandal-driven fall from office and beyond, this book is a revelatory examination of Agnew's role as one of the founding fathers of the modern Republican Party and of the link between Agnew's "people s party" and the fraught party of populists and businessmen today.
