During the second half of the sixteenth century, they fought for freedom of worship in the French 'wars of religion' which culminated in the Edict of Nantes in 1598. Non seulement le protestantisme rejetait le magistère romain mais il refusait en même temps de remettre l'Église aux mains d'une cléricature qui aurait seule le pouvoir de décider. Le processus de confessionnalisation et de progressive institutionnalisation des églises protestantes a contraint les réformateurs à poser les termes d'un ministère particulier, celui de la parole. Mais, le pasteur exerce un ministère (c'est-à-dire un service) et non un magistère. La conception calvinienne du gouvernement de l'église conduit à confier l'encadrement des fidèles et la gestion matérielle de la communauté à un groupe d'hommes (surveillants ou anciens) qui compose le consistoire, ancêtre, en France, du conseil presbytéral. À ce ministère s'ajoute celui du diaconat et de charges comme celles de chantre et de lecteur. Presided over by the pastor, it met each week to discuss matters of ecclesiastical administration, the spiritual and liturgical life of the congregation, assistance to the poor and, above all, morals control. Accordingly, the registers of consistorial deliberation constitute a remarkable source for the study of church discipline, the implementation of new liturgical forms and the organization of social welfare. They also disclose the details of human sociability, everyday behavior and popular culture. R. Mentzer has identified 309 surviving manuscript registers of consistorial deliberation for the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They come from 156 different churches. The manuscripts are housed primarily at Paris in the Archives Nationales and the Bibliothèque du Protestantisme Français, and in the provincial departmental and municipal archives." (Publisher).
