Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The unsuccessful 1905 Revolution and the case of Russian-Ruled Poland. Rising Subjects explores the change of the public sphere in Russian Poland during the 1905 Revolution. The 1905 Revolution was one of the few bottom-up political transformations and general democratisations in Polish history. It was a popular rebellion fostering political participation of the working class. The infringement of previously carefully guarded limits of the public sphere triggered a powerful conservative reaction among the commercial and landed elites, and frightened the intelligentsia. Polish nationalists promised to eliminate the revolutionary "anarchy" and gave meaning to the sense of disappointment after the revolution. This study considers the 1905 Revolution as a tipping point for the ongoing developments of the public sphere. It addresses the question of Polish socialism, nationalism, and antisemitism. It demonstrates the difficulties in using the class cleavage for democratic politics in a conflict-ridden, multiethnic polity striving for an irredentist self-assertion against the imperial power. AUTHOR: Wiktor Marzec is an assistant professor and project leader in the Robert Zajonc Institute for Social Studies, University of Warsaw, Poland. Currently, he runs a comparative project on political trajectories of the late tsarist borderlands. 24 b/w illustrations The Unsuccessful 1905 Revolution and the Case of Russian-Ruled Poland Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condición: New. This book considers Lódz as the capital of the Polish nineteenth century, and the history of this former textile hub, which now finds itself in central Poland, as one of struggle with modern change in Eastern Europe. The authors boldly challenge the romantic and noble-based Polish cultural imaginary, offering instead a revolutionary path to understanding confrontation with modernity in the region. The book examines local press debates during four pivotal periods, each of which stimulated self-reflection on the idea of the modern city: Rapid industrial growth in the tsarist borderlands; State crafting after WWI; Socialist restructuring after 1945; Transition and deindustrialization after 1989. Together these insights constitute a multifaceted portrait of twentieth-century urban experience beyond the metropolis, in different historical contexts. This innovative, interdisciplinary work deftly integrates urban and cultural history, historical sociology and discourse research. It will be of great value to Polish and Jewish studies specialists, as well as those in the field of Eastern European and Slavic studies. The book also addresses core intellectual debates within urban studies, modernity studies, and historical discourse analysis worldwide.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The volume contains selected contributions to the Max Weber Foundation's annual conference, organised by the German Historical Institute Moscow. The contributors look at the crisis-ridden processes of modernity through the prism of individual biographies, which manifest themselves in national and social, anti-imperial and de-colonial, global, and regional movements. The contributions cover the Russian, Habsburg, and Ottoman Empires, Germany, Italy, the USA, France, the Soviet Union, Iran, Poland, Turkey, and Africa. They focus on transnational and trans-imperial life paths, networks and the imprints of the actors as well as forms of (auto)biographical self-constitution and the political use of biographical narratives.…
