Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. In Carrolls civic-oriented conceptual art, humor and provocation sit alongside rigorous research and ethical commitmentPublished with Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.Working across performance, publishing, urban intervention and long-term social engagement, New Yorkbased artist Mary Ellen Carroll (born 1961) uses conversation, contracts, zoning codes and bureaucratic processes as the key components of their conceptual language. Their practice unfolds through law, architecture and lived systems rather than discrete objects. The artist often operates in real time and in public view, embracing uncertainty, risk and contradiction as generative conditions. How To Talk Dirty and Influence People offers a comprehensive overview of Carrolls work since the 1980s. Bringing together performance documentation, new critical essays, commissioned fiction and poetry and conversations with the artist, this publication presents the oeuvre of an artist whose work insists that speech, negotiation and persistence are powerful tools for reshaping social reality. Others are newly developed for this book. All have met the strict standards of Good Housekeeping's food department. The staff checked and rechecked these recipes, trying several brands of ingredients, eliminating extra steps, using fewer utensils, confirming the cooking times, making sure they are nutritionally sound and, most importantly, that they tasted as good as they looked. Soft cover. Condición: New. Limited Edition. Out of print - limited edition soft cover artists' book 100 German Men: Documentary began with a simple question asked of strangers on the streets : where are you from? Over more than a year and nearly a thousand encounters, Carroll photographed men who answered "Germany", implying heritage rather than birthplace , and who agreed to be photographed. From those encounters, one hundred portraits were selected, each paired with a stereotypically German name: not the subject's own, but an assigned one. In this investigation of ethnicity and cultural identity, Carroll examines how history shapes and burdens national self-perception in post-reunification Germany, a moment of intense debate about what German identity could or should mean. The subtitle Documentary quietly implicates the truth claims of the documentary tradition itself: the document records nothing stable, only the gap between self-identification, stereotype, and the photograph's supposed authority. The back cover reprints a passage from Norbert Elias's The Germans: Power Struggles and the Development of Habitus in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries a key sociological text on German national character and the civilizing process, grounding the work in rigorous intellectual company. First shown at Printed Matter, New York in 1998.…

"Despite an oeuvre spanning more than 20 years and a disavowal of any signature style, Mary Ellen Carroll has throughout her career been investigating a single, fundamental question: What is a work of art? The resulting multifarious, provocative and often wry outpouring in architecture, writing, performance, photography, filmmaking, printmaking, sculpture and painting has been collected into this book--the New York conceptual artist's long-awaited first monograph." Essay by Jonathan Flatley; interview with the artist conducted by Hamza Walker. 360 pages; color illustrations throughout; 7 x 9.75 inches. Index.
