Jahrhundert publizierten Karl Leonhard Reinhold und Arthur Schopenhauer ihre Gedanken über die Voraussetzungen des Erkennens und sittlichen Handelns. In Auseinandersetzung mit Kants Vernunftkritik bestimmten beide Denker auf eigenständige Weise die Begriffe der Vorstellung und des Willens neu. Karl Leonhard Reinhold fasste seine Gedanken in seinem einschlägigen Versuch einer neuen Theorie des menschlichen Vorstellungsvermögens von 1789 zusammen. Und Arthur Schopenhauer stellte in seinem in der ersten Auflage 1819 erschienenen Hauptwerk Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung eine ausgeprägte vorstellungs- und willenstheoretische Neuauslegung von Kants Vernunftkritik zur Diskussion. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich den Details dieser ähnlich ausgerichteten philosophischen Projekte. Im ersten Teil geht der Autor auf die verwandten Begründungen und Ausdeutungen der These der Unerkennbarkeit des Dinges an sich ein. Und er verweist auf sachliche Zusammenhänge und Differenzen zwischen Reinholds Bemühen, Kants transzendentalen Beweis in Sachen synthetischer Erkenntnis a priori durch einen Satz des Bewusstseins zu festigen, und Schopenhauers Erkenntnisbegründung auf der Basis eines Satzes vom Grunde. In weiteren Teilen erörtert er deren Auffassungen von Willen und Willensfreiheit, ihre Kritik an Kants Sittengesetz sowie ihre Polemik gegenüber der nachkantischen Spekulation (Fichte, Schelling, Hegel). Though many key aspects of post-Kantian philosophy were discussed, the philosophical confrontation between Reinhold and Fichte is most instructive for the understanding of post-Kantian philosophy. The exchange started when Fichte published his verdict on Reinhold's Elementarphilosophie and disapproved of its fundamental principle. In 1794 Fichte challenged Reinhold by presenting his Wissenschaftslehre. Reinhold was not convinced of Fichte's foundation of philosophy at first, but announced that he accepted the Wissenschaftslehre in 1797. While Reinhold and Fichte officially collaborated in the following three years, tensions concerning fundamental questions were still present. When Reinhold adopted Rational Realism, his relation to Fichte deteriorated and the exchange between the two finally ended. The contributions in the present collection focus on the central systematic issues at the different stages of the confrontation between Fichte and Reinhold, thereby illuminating questions that are essential to the understanding of the evolution of post-Kantian German philosophy.
