Malcolm McLeod recorded the life of privation and danger of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century mixed-blood cowboy. He worked for cattle owners across Montana and in southern British Columbia and eastern Washington. Born in Washington Territory in 1870 of Scotch, French Canadian, and Chippewa Indian heritage, McLeod traveled countless miles over the years. But home remained the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana, where he was enrolled and allotted land. McLeod worked for Charles Allard, one of the largest stock owners on the Flathead Reservation. He herded Allard's famous buffalo herd and even rode buffalo for Allard's short-lived Wild West Show in 1893. In later years McLeod tried his hand at farming, at a harness and shoe repair shop, and in the taxi business, but these enterprises never provided the excitement and danger of his cowboy work. It was the labor and experiences of men like McLeod that built the modern Flathead Reservation community and economy. The story of the cattle barons has often overshadowed the experiences of the common cowboy on whose labour the ranchers' wealth was built. Malcolm McLeod (1870-1944) recorded the life of privation and danger of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century mixed blood cowboy. THE KIVA, Vol. 24, No. 1, 1958 (San Dieguito Implements from the Terraces of the Rincon-Pantano and Rillito Drainage System), Malcolm J. Rogers, first edition, softcover, illustrated (drawings, map), 1958. ITEM CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks, but there is a light crease in the upper righthand corner with no effect on the text. The wraps are in very good condition (discolored areas on back cover). 9 x 6, 24 pages, 6 ounces XX [From the INTRODUCTION] Malcolm J. Rogers, formerly Director of the San Diego Museum of Man, emerges from a regrettably long retirement with this paper, his first on Early Man since the publication of Early Lithic Industries of the Lower Basin of the Colorado River and Adjacent Desert Areas. Mr. Rogers is known as a semi-legendary master of desert archaeology and as the author of a knotty and difficult report. Educated before the onset of the age of specialization, when it was still possible for a man to believe that he might be able to learn everything about everything, Mr. Rogers can be compared only to the English natural historians of the Victorian Era in his command of a multiplicity of knowledges, a command required in the solution of the problem of Early Man in the deserts, a task in which he has been engaged for nearly 40 years. Working backward from the present, he mastered Yuman ethnology and Yuman ceramics; combining this knowledge with climatology, physical geology, biology and anthropology enabled him to go to the beginnings of ceramic history in the area, thence to Early Man, both in the desert and on the Pacific coast. Mr. Rogers' pioneering entry into the area preceded the swarm of relic hunters and amateur archaeologists, land developments and the destructive floods of recent years, which have so utterly destroyed the pristine archaeological context of the deserts in which he worked. He has walked literally hundreds of miles of ancient and prehistoric trails, surveyed the beach terraces of the old Blake Sea and the Mohave sinks with such thoroughness that later workers reported no sherds to be found.
