A Good copy. This is the February 1849 (Vol. II, No. II) issue of the Western Journal, a monthly magazine that promoted agriculture and the mechanic arts. Front cover reads, "Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts are the basis of Civilization." As noted in the title, the magazine also featured a variety of other subjects including manufacturing, internal improvement (infrastructure projects), commerce, and general literature. This issue contains six main articles, "Commercial Statistics," "Steamboat Statistics," and "Miscellaneous." The main articles are titled as follows: "St. Louis--Its Early History," "Bon Harbor--Its Advantages for Manufacturing," "Commerce of the East," "Free Trade," "Cultivation of Grapes in Missouri," and "Sheep Husbandry." The articles are on Pages 71-131. The remaining pages comprise the rest of the magazine's features. "Commercial Statistics" show numerical figures for St. Louis imports, exports, and monthly prices of tobacco, flour, wheat, corn, hemp, and lead over the last five years. Among the imports are bacon, beef, barley, beeswax, corn, coffee, cotton, flour, fish, molasses, pork, salt, sugar, tobacco, wheat, and whisky. Among the exports are bacon, buffalo robes, corn, flour, hemp, lard, oats, oil, pork, rye, shot, deer skins, flax seed, tallow, tobacco, and wool. "Steamboat Statistics" show the number of steamboat arrivals and associated tonnage in St. Louis from 1846-1848 among other steamboat-related data. Much of the information after the articles is relatively brief; some parts are only about a paragraph or a few lines long.…
