Chapter 1 introduces the mathematical structure of free-boundary problems through classical examples, including oscillatory zoning, dendritic crystal growth in undercooled melts, directional solidification, flame propagation, Saffman-Taylor viscous fingering, streamer formation, and electrodeposition. Part I (Chapters 2-3) develops the nonlinear theory of pattern formation in the one-dimensional Stefan problem, with particular attention to auto-oscillatory behaviour during directional solidification. Part II (Chapters 4-5) treats two-dimensional quasi-stationary Stefan problems for open and closed geometries using conformal mapping techniques, including numerical simulations and connections with the Shraiman-Bensimon equations. Part III (Chapters 6-8) extends the theory to fully non-stationary interfaces, introducing a variational formulation and generalized dissipative functionals applicable to dendritic growth, pattern formation, and interface evolution for both open and closed boundaries. Part IV (Chapters 9-13) applies the theoretical framework to a wide range of distributed-media phenomena, including combustion stability, systems with surface diffusion and singular boundaries, reaction-diffusion pattern formation, heat-diffusion-limited thermal coagulation in biological tissues (with applications to tumour necrosis and hyperthermia), and an order-parameter model for multilane traffic flow describing hysteresis, synchronized traffic, cluster formation, and jam transitions. Part V (Chapters 14-15) provides the mathematical foundations underlying the preceding analysis, covering conformal mappings of canonical domains--including the half-plane, strip, annulus, and related regions--and the operator theory of integral transformations such as convolution. A substantial contribution to the mathematical theory of nonlinear interface dynamics, combining rigorous analytical methods with applications ranging from phase transitions and combustion to biomedical physics and traffic modelling, and serving as an important reference for researchers in applied mathematics, nonlinear science, and mathematical physics.

The model treats biological tissue as consisting of a continuous cellular component penetrated by a highly branched arterial and venous vascular network, deriving macroscopic governing equations from mesoscopic descriptions of transport within individual vessels. Exploiting the correspondence between diffusion processes and random walks, the authors develop a systematic averaging procedure over all levels of the vascular hierarchy, yielding continuum equations that incorporate the self-regulating behaviour of living tissue. A central theme is the emergence of ideal self-regulation in large hierarchical systems, whereby global regulation arises through purely local interactions between individual elements, without any component possessing complete knowledge of the system as a whole--a mechanism the authors suggest may apply equally to ecological and economic systems. The volume is divided into six parts comprising seventeen chapters. Part I, The Basis of the Bioheat Transfer Theory, introduces transport in heterogeneous media, physiological aspects of heat transfer, hierarchical vascular models, and governing equations, concluding with a random-walk formulation of heat transport through vascular networks. Part II, Transport Phenomena Caused by Blood Flow through Hierarchical Vascular Networks, develops generalized bioheat equations describing the influence of vascular architecture and blood flow. Part III examines heat transfer under highly nonuniform blood-flow distributions and distinguishes between averaged and actual perfusion rates. Part IV, Theory of Heat Transfer in Living Tissue with Temperature Self-Regulation, investigates local thermal regulation, ideal self-regulation, and applications to tumour tissue, including mathematical models relevant to hyperthermia and cryosurgical treatment. Part V studies spatial and temporal temperature fluctuations and small-scale thermal heterogeneity, concluding with a discussion of the medical and biophysical implications of the theory. Part VI consists of an extensive appendix exploring cooperative mechanisms of self-regulation in large hierarchical systems, including applications to ecological trophic networks and market structures under perfect competition. The volume concludes with a bibliography and index. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book tackles the challenging question which mathematical formalisms and possibly new physical notions should be developed for quantitatively describing human cognition and behavior, in addition to the ones already developed in the physical and… cognitive sciences.Indeed, physics is widely used in modeling social systems, where, in particular, new branches of science such as sociophysics and econophysics have arisen. However, many if not most characteristic features of humans like willingness, emotions, memory, future prediction, and moral norms, to name but a few, are not yet properly reflected in the paradigms of physical thought and theory. The choice of a relevant formalism for modeling mental phenomena requires the comprehension of the general philosophical questions related to the mind-body problem. Plausible answers to these questions are investigated and reviewed, notions and concepts to be used or to be taken into account are developed and some challenging questions are posed as open problems. This text addresses theoretical physicists and neuroscientists modeling any systems and processes where human factors play a crucial role, philosophers interested in applying philosophical concepts to the construction of mathematical models, and the mathematically oriented psychologists and sociologists, whose research is fundamentally related to modeling mental processes.
