By being marginal to the main European colonial metropolis, the institutional, intellectual and visual experience of Florentine Orientalism enriches the debate on power and colonial knowledge that has been very much at the centre of the social sciences in the last decades. Likewise, by exploring the intellectual world of Bombay in the second half of the nineteenth century, made up of people from a variety of cultural, national and religious backgrounds, this book contributes to the wider cultural history of colonial India. By combining fascinating unpublished materials of this period, with a deep analysis embedded in contemporary historiographical approaches such as European and India encounters in a colonial context; the debate on orientalism initiated by Edward W. Said, or the global circulation of knowledge, people and objects, this books provides new insights into different fields.

Consequently, the journal has undergone some alteratio…ns - the articles cover a single theme and there are no book reviews and has simultaneously established a set of editorial and orthographical norms for use in all future editions. Born at the family castle in Navarre on 7 April 1505, the man who would be recorded for posterity as St. Francis Xavier, would die on the island of Sangchuan, at the gates of China, while working for the Portuguese crown. By then, he had already spent some twelve years carrying out missionary work as he crossed India, Southeast Asia and Japan. The following pages contain a series of texts that examine the saint's relations with King João III - including the monarch's vital role in the establishment and growth of the Jesuits as a new religious institution, while Xavier was the epitome of the new Joanine model for expansion - and with St. Ignatius Loyola, his friend and mentor, and how the latter's Spiritual Exercises influenced Xavier's practices as a missionary. The articles also cover Xavier's beatification and even faster canonisation, with the resulting construction of the image of the saint's figure. The latter is examined both in terms of the less sacred festivities found in popular experience and imagination, and in the more catechistic approach that the method introduced and liturgical standardisation established overseas. In fact, the rapid and effective process of winning popular affection is one of the reasons why the iconographic programmes that interpreted the saint's life and works were defined so early. One article focuses on the cycle of paintings by Manuel Henriques in Évora. Despite being of secondary pictorial importance, the cycle's narrative pro- gramme expresses the multi-scene values of Counterreformation doctrine. This visual aspect, in conjunction with the texts printed at the dawn of the seventeenth century and the deeply rooted memory of the peoples who were touched by the Jesuit's words, turned St. Francis Xavier into a saint who still has a strong presence. The crowds and outpourings of religious feeling in Goa whenever the saint's body is used as a motive for pilgrimage - as happened in November are the ultimate expression of this impact. Even today, they have the same effect and stimulate the same reflection as they did at the height of the nineteenth century in two English women (one Catholic, the other Protestant), whose ideas are revisited here through their diaries.
