The whips were the men who drove horse teams along the roads of the developing colonies. In his long life, he was to witness the diggers crossing the Blue Mountains to the gold fields and the feats of the trans-oceanic aviators. He saw Katoomba develop from bushland to the busy 'Playground of the Commonwealth'. Like his friend Henry Lawson, he never forgot the Aborigines, bush women, soldiers. miners, farmers, and other ordinary workers whose characters became part of the Australian identity.
