The inspiration of the sailing ship for the artist, manifest in the great marine paintings of four hundred years, is part of the adventure too. Captain Donald Macintyre has written a historical record of four centuries, from the first circumnavigation of the world to the virtual disappearance of the square~rigged ship. Captain Macintyre traces the development of sails, rigging and hull design, from the caravel, carrack and galleon to the clipper epoch, when the sailing ship became a thing of visual and functional perfection; and beyond to the autumn of the age of sail, to the great steel~hulled four and five~masted barques and barquentines, which had a strange beauty of their own.' After the horrors of Anson's voyage it is a relief to read of Bougainville's reception at Tahiti and the meeting of Cook's sailors with the nymphs of Nootka Sound. In good condition, lightly aged, laid down on part of leaf from album, with the reverse carrying part of the frank to a letter from another unidentified individual, with free postmark from 1826. Byron's frank has the customary red-ink postmark at top right ('FREE | 8 DE 8 | 18…26'), and is laid out by him in the customary fashion: 'Portsmouth December Seven | 1826 | The Honble. Mrs. Collingwood | Hawkhurst | Kent'. Byron's signature 'Byron.', at bottom left, is only underlined, and not enclosed within the two parallel lines as required. There is a naval connection between Byron and the addressee. Collingwood House was bought by the celebrated Admiral (of Trafalgar fame) in 1816 for his daughter and her husband George Newnham. It was later the residence of astronomer Sir John Herschel.
