The inspiration of the sailing ship for the artist, manifest in the great marine paintings of four hundred years, is part of the adventure too. So are the excitement and love inspired by the sailing ship in ordinary people, which created the demand for innumerable simple prints of ships throughout the age of sail. Captain Donald Macintyre has written a historical record of four centuries, from the first circumnavigation of the world to the virtual disappearance of the square~rigged ship. This is followed by a selection of contemporary writings of many nations, from 1520 to 1914 ( Francisco Antonio Pigafetta, William Bourne, Sir Francis Drake the Younger, Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, Gerrit de Veer, Willem Cornelison Schouten, Thomas Heywood, A. Richer, George Lord Anson, Louis de Bougainville, Captain James Cook, Horatio Viscount Nelson, Captain Isaac Hull USN, Richard Dana, Captain H. A. Chippendale USN, Basil Lubbock, Basil Greenhill CBE, Joseph Conrad, etc.), each piece showing an important aspect of the age of sail, the whole combining with over three hundred beautiful illustrations to give a comprehensive picture of the sailing ship experience. Captain Macintyre traces the development of sails, rigging and hull design, from the caravel, carrack and galleon to the clipper epoch, when the sailing ship became a thing of visual and functional perfection; and beyond to the autumn of the age of sail, to the great steel~hulled four and five~masted barques and barquentines, which had a strange beauty of their own.' He tells the story of maritime exploration and the establishment of commerce : a story of friendly or hostile competition among nations sharing the common experience of the struggle against the sea. Adventure, in the ordinary sense of dramatic and exciting episodes, fills the history of sail and has received an extraordinary amount of eyewitness documentation. The selection of contemporary documents in this volume unfolds a stirring tale of storms, shipwrecks and fights, of famous ships and the men who sailed in them. It shows, as nothing else can, what life in sailing ships was really like. It relives great moments of discovery or despair, such as the first rounding of Cape Horn, or the last voyage of Willem Barents in his brave and futile search for the Northeast Passage, ennobled by the courage and dignity of a crew lost among ice and polar bears in the dark, dreaded Arctic winter. It evokes the brutality of life at sea, but also its warmer, more humorous side. After the horrors of Anson's voyage it is a relief to read of Bougainville's reception at Tahiti and the meeting of Cook's sailors with the nymphs of Nootka Sound. The odyssey of the human spirit is ever present in The Adventure of Sail, from the perceptive introduction by the famous modern sailing man and boat designer, Uffa Fox, to the highly.…

Frank on 7 x 13 cm panel cut from front of envelope. In good condition, lightly aged, laid down on part of leaf from album, with the reverse carrying part of the frank to a letter from another unidentified individual, with free postmark from 1826. Byron's frank has the customary red-ink postmark at top right ('FREE | 8 DE 8 | 1826'), and is laid out by him in the customary fashion: 'Portsmouth December Seven | 1826 | The Honble. Mrs. Collingwood | Hawkhurst | Kent'. Byron's signature 'Byron.', at bottom left, is only underlined, and not enclosed within the two parallel lines as required. There is a naval connection between Byron and the addressee. Collingwood House was bought by the celebrated Admiral (of Trafalgar fame) in 1816 for his daughter and her husband George Newnham. It was later the residence of astronomer Sir John Herschel.…

Condición: Near fine. 27 x 44 cm page taped to 41 x 53 cm board. Illustration itself is 18 x 34 cm. Vertical crease. "Plate XVII" engraved at top right. Minor spot at bottom edge. An important engraving from Lord George Anson's "A Voyage Round the World in the Years 1740-1744." This is the fifth edition of the work. Published by John and Paul Knapton in London in 1749, the work was compiled by Richard Walter from Anson's papers and materials. The account of Anson's circumnavigation of the world is considered a "masterpiece of descriptive travel" and was the "most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century" (Hill). Anson's voyage inspired many British explorations in the Pacific, including that of Captain Cook. Anson's trip was strictly a military enterprise, though, its intent to disrupt Spanish commerce. At the beginning of a war with Spain, Anson's eight ships started out with the intention of harassing the Spanish on the west coast of South America. Seven ships were lost around Cape Horn, leading to the deaths of 600 out of 900 men. While the expedition was mostly a disaster, they did capture the Manila Galleon near China so that Anson and the surviving members of his crew reached England much richer.…

BY GEORGE ANSON, Esq; Now LORD ANSON, Commander in Chief of a Squadron of His Majesty's Ships, sent upon an Expedition to the South-Seas. Compiled from his PAPERS and MATERIALS, By RICHARD WALTER, M. A. Chaplain of his Majesty's Ship the Centurion, in that Expedition. Illustrated with Forty-Two COPPER-PLATES. The Fifth Edition. LONDON: Printed for the AUTHOR; By John and Paul Knapton, in Ludgate-Street. MDCCXLIX. [Sabin 1626; Cox 1748 vol1, p.49; ESTC T74545; Borba de Moraes, p.38, Hill I, pp. 317-318]. "Perhaps the most popular maritime exploration of the 18th century" [Sabin 1626]. Our copy has NO MISSING PLATES or MAPS which is not common. This is the official account of Anson's adventurous and troubled four-year circumnavigation of the globe. In 1740 England was at war with Spain and equipped six warships and two merchant vessels with 1900 men, many of whom were untrained and unprepared for such a voyage, under the command of Commodore George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America, thus cutting off Spanish supplies from the Pacific Area. From the outset the voyage was fraught with problems, sickness and deaths among the crew, attacks by Spanish ships that had received word of the expedition, storms, flawed navigation charts, mutinies, but also with the successful capture of a Spanish galleon off the coast of the Philippines which yielded an immense treasure of over 34 tons of silver. After a brief pause in Canton, Anson started his voyage back to England in December 1743, rounding the Cape of Good Hope in April and arriving in England in June 1744, where he was richly rewarded for the capture of such a lavish treasure. Although several private journals of the voyage had been published, the official version of events was published in London 1748, as "A Voyage Round the World.". It was a great popular and commercial success and a 5th edition was already in print by 1749. As well as detailing the adventures of the expedition, it contained a huge amount of useful information for future navigators and with 42 detailed charts and engravings, most based on drawings by Capt. Piercy Brett, it laid the basis for later scientific and survey expeditions by Captain Cook and others. The final words from the authorized account are: «Thus was this expedition finished, when it had lasted three years and nine months, after having, by its event, strongly evinced this important truth: That though prudence, intrepidity, and perseverance united are not exempted from the blows of adverse fortune, yet in a long series of transactions they usually rise superior to its power, and in the end rarely fail of proving successful.».…
