His life's journey between Italy, Flanders, and Spain, and the reinterpretations of his life by his contemporaries in art, literature, and the press, give us the opportunity to reflect on the multiple identities and the physical and mental wanderings of many Europeans of the Early Modern Age. Cominciò nel 1871 prestando servizio come mozzo e quando si congedò, nel 1922, era capitano di lungo corso della NGI, una delle principali compagnie di navigazione italiane e del mondo. In quei cinquant'anni assisté a cambiamenti epocali: iniziato alla vita di mare sui velieri diretti a Oriente, si trovò a navigare sui piroscafi che trasportavano gli emigranti tra fine Ottocento e inizio Novecento. Fu lui a ispirare a Edmondo De Amicis il personaggio del capitano nel romanzo Sull'oceano. Narratore straordinario, nella sua autobiografia e nelle sue innumerevoli lettere descrisse con ricchezza di particolari la vita di bordo, i cambiamenti nel lavoro marittimo nel periodo di passaggio dalla vela al vapore, ma anche e soprattutto l'epocale fenomeno migratorio che condusse milioni di italiani nelle Americhe.
