Neben der Funktion der Musikreferenz soll beantwortet werden, auf welche Art und Weise Musik in der Popliteratur eingesetzt wird und ob die Verwendung innerhalb der Popliteratur einheitlich verläuft oder variiert. In Kapitel eins werden Pop, Popliteratur und Intermedialität definiert. Im nächsten Schritt wird anhand des 'Handbuch[s] für Literatur & Musik' von Nicola Gess und Alexander Honold der aktuelle Forschungsstand von intermedialer Referenz von Musik in Literatur herausgestellt. Besonders im Fokus stehen hier die Methoden des 'showing' und 'telling'. Im Anschluss daran werden zwei der bedeutendsten Werke der Popliteratur auf diese Methoden der Intermedialität hin untersucht. 'Soloalbum' von Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre und 'Rave' von Rainald Goetz werden als zwei Vertreter ihrer Gattung gegenübergestellt und in ihrer Verwendung hinsichtlich Musik verglichen.Die Popliteratur ist eine moderne Literaturgattung, deren Ursprung in den 1950er Jahren liegt. Sie weist ein hohes Maß an Aktualität auf, da immer noch neue Werke ihrer bekanntesten Popautoren veröffentlicht werden. Die Popliteratur ist jedoch nur eine Teilströmung des Pop. Das wohl noch bekanntere und kommerziellere Medium des Pop ist die Popmusik. Die beiden Medien stehen jedoch nicht nur für sich allein, sondern werden oft intermedial zueinander referenziert.

Bekanntheit erlangte sie im 18. Jahrhundert durch ihren prominentesten Vertreter Johann Casper Lavater. Dieser veröffentlichte 1778 in vier Bänden seine 'Physiognomische(n) Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe'. Negative Aufmerksamkeit erregte die Physiognomik im 20. Jahrhundert, da die Nationalsozialisten Teile dieser Wissenschaft für ihre Rassenkunde missbrauchten.Heute wird der Begriff der Physiognomik selten verwendet, jedoch werden die Techniken dieser Wissenschaft durchaus noch in einigen Teilen der Gesellschaft angewendet. Besonders in der Film- und Fernsehindustrie wird häufig mit simplen Stereotypen oder einfachen äußerlichen Merkmalen gearbeitet. Um die heutige Relevanz der physiognomischen Fragmente Lavaters zu prüfen, wird das dort verkündete physiognomische Wissen auf eine bis heute aktuelle Filmreihe angewendet: James Bond.Es wird untersucht, ob sich die Bösewichte der James Bond Filmreihe allein durch ihre physiognomischen Merkmale als solche identifizieren lassen. Im Hinblick der Textanalyse von Lavaters 'Physiognomische Fragmente' werden Kategorien physiologischer Merkmale von Bösewichten erarbeitet. Anschließend werden diese mit Hilfe einer Bildanalyse auf die ausgewählten Gegenspieler Bonds angewendet.

Johann Casper Lavater versuchte im 18. Jahrhundert von äußeren Merkmalen auf den Charakter eines Menschen zu schließen. Im Rahmen dieser wissenschaftlichen Arbeit wird dieser fast 250 Jahre zurückliegende Versuch Lavaters mit den Castingprozessen der längsten Filmreihe der Geschichte verglichen, wodurch geprüft wird, ob Lavaters Physiognomik noch Relevanz besitzt. Der erste Film 'James Bond 007- jagt Dr. No' erschien 1962. Der aktuellste Film 'James Bond 007 - Spectre' erschien 2015. Folglich erstreckt sich die Filmreihe bereits über sechs Dekaden. Für 2020 ist bereits ein weiterer Film mit dem Titel 'James Bond 007- No Time to Die' bestätigt. In dieser Zeitspanne spielten die Bond-Filme bis heute über 15 Milliarden Euro ein.Als Grundlage der Filme dienen die Romane von Ian Fleming. Die Prozesse des Castings lassen sich zwischen Literatur und Film verorten. Da über die Castings der James Bond-Filme keine Aufzeichnungen einzusehen sind, bleibt als Analyse nur der Vergleich des Ergebnisses, die Besetzung des Films, und der Grundlage, der Romane Ian Flemings. Zu den einzelnen Themen der Physiognomik und der James Bond-Filme gibt es jeweils unzählige Veröffentlichungen. Jedoch gibt es keine Literatur, die konkret Lavaters Physiognomik aus dem 18. Jahrhundert mit der James Bond-Filmreihe des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts vergleicht und in Bezug setzt. Als Primärquellen dieser Arbeit dienen die Physiognomische[n] Fragmente von Johann Casper Lavater, die Romane Casino Royale und Dr. No von Ian Fleming und die entsprechenden zwei James Bond-Filme. Als wichtigste Sekundärliteratur bezüglich der Castingprozesse dienen Texte von Jörg Schweinitz über Stereotypen und von Umberto Eco über die Erzählstruktur der Bond-Romane. Als Literatur bezüglich Lavaters Physiognomik werden Texte von Georg Christoph Lichtenberg und Roland Barthes verwendet.
