REFERENCES : Gilles-Chikhaoui A: From the table to the bed: controlling female sexuality through food in French Renaissance literature: "Jean Liébault was a doctor and also son-in-law of Charles Estienne, who wrote De Nutrimentis (1550), a dietary treatise. Liébault himself compiled one of these books, the Thesaurus sanitatis pirtitu facilis (1577) translated in French as the Thresor universel des pauvres et des riches and bases a part of his medical discourse on dietetics as a corrective to disease. Jean-Louis Flandrin showed how this treatise focused on diet and how dietetics of the Renaissance is as concerned with the seasons, constitutions and suitable food as with cooking techniques and seasonings (Margolin, 1982: 90); "Réach-Ngô A : Ni savants, ni populaires : la stratégie éditoriale des "Trésors de médecine" à la Renaissance, Mémoires du Livre, 2014, 6, n° 1 ; Coste J : La médecine pratique et ses genres littéraires en France à l'époque moderne ; Porter R : The Popularization of Medicine, p. 102.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. A scarce, late 16th century, first edition of Liébault's Three Books Pertaining to the Infirmities and Diseases of Women, being one of the first treatises published in France dealing exclusively with women's diseases. The work addresses infertility, pregnancy, menstruation, and female infirmities…, with commentary from Liébault on uterine disorders and emphasizing empirical observation. The work was highly influential in French gynaecology, marking a step toward modern gynecology by integrating Renaissance anatomical insights and promoting preventive care for women, and being published several times. Among many other notes, the work also has one of the first accounts of hot flashes, described as petite rougers by Liébault. It has been disputed that Liébault's work is a copy of Giovanni Marinello's 1563 Italian treatise Le medicine partenenti alle infermità delle donne, though this has been historically disputed. Born in Dijon, Liébault largely practiced medicine in Paris, becoming physician to Catherine de Bourbon, sister of Henry IV. He married Nicole Estienne, daughter of the famed printer Charles Estienne. Careful collation and comparison to digitized copies indicates that this is the 1582 first edition, as per 30811 on USTC. USTC records 11 existing copies of this edition in libraries. One finely bound volume in octavo, (14 of 16)+923+(21) pages This volume is in very good shape, with minor wear and wear to the binding. There is minor foxing and soiling throughout.

Various translations, including this 1616 edition appeared subsequently. It was translated into English by George Baker, under the title The Newe Jewell of Health, published in London, 1576 and reissued with the title The Practise of the new and old Phisicke, London, 1599. The beginning of the use of chemical remedies in France. - LIEBAUD (Iean) [LIÃBAULT (Jean)]. Together the manner of distilling, oils, and quintessences of all kinds of materials, preparing antimony and mercury powder, making extractions, artificial salts and potable gold. Curious and necessary work for all kinds of people. "Secrets of Medicine and Chemical Philosophy" is a work of distilled remedies by the physician Jean Lià bault (around 1535-1596) published in 1573. It is in the lineage of the "Book of Distillation" by Hieronymus Brunschwig of 1500, then of those of Philipp Ulstad (1525) and Conrad Gesner (1552) and marks the beginning of the influence of Paracelsian chemical medicine in France. Very rare. Not listed in USTC or OCLC but found in three French libraries. No sales recorded at auction in the last century (RBH). Provenance: This copy is from the chemistry book collection of Arthur C. Greenberg.

Woodcut printer's ornaments, head and tail-pieces, hist…oriated initials, and numerous illustrations in text and full-page. Modern sprinkled calf ruled in blind and decoratively blind-stamped, spine with five raised bands forming six compartments and gilt-lettered black morocco lettering-piece in second compartment with gilt date at foot First edition of Markham's revised English translation of Estienne and Liebault's important late-sixteenth century work on animal husbandry, gardening, and country living. Markham, the most prolific English writer on agriculture and farming in the first half of the seventeenth century, adapts herein a work by Charles Estienne (Charles Stevens). "It was first published in Latin as the Praedium Rusticum in 1554. Estienne himself translated it into French and Liebault brought it out shortly after Estienne's death in 1564. Surflet's first English translation appeared in 1600." [Hunt] This first Markham edition, based on the Surflet translation, is noted for its additions, as well as its rarity. Fussell refers to this adapation of Estienne's work as being among Markham's most important works on farming. The text on the verso of the title, under the caption "The Contents," gives an accurate description of the work: "There is contained in this last Edition, whatsoever can be required for the building, or good ordering, of a Husbandmans House, or Countrey Farme; as namely, to foresee the changes and alterations of Times; to know the motions, and powers, of the Sunne and Moone, upon the things about which Husbandry is occupied: as to cure the sicke labouring Man; to cure Beasts and flying Fowles of all sorts; to dresse, plant, or make Gardens, as well as for the Kitchin, and Physicke use, as also in Quarters." The description continues on to touch a variety of subjects, including the planting and care of trees, the keeping of bees, the making of wine and beer, and the distilling of liquor, as well as hunting and hawking. The illustrations include several full-page woodcut plans for knot gardens (pp.257-275), a garden labyrinth (p.276), a tobacco plant (p.217), plus large woodcuts of a cow (p.99) and horse (p.138) with references to various ailments, among several others images. The present example is a complete copy of a scarce book, often found defective. Arents 123. Bitting, pp.146-147. ESTC S121357. Fussell, p.28. Goldsmiths 451. Hunt 202. Kress 353. McDonald, p.90. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF THIS GYNAECOLOGICAL HANDBOOK First edition thus 8vo. pp. (xvi) 923 (i) (xvi). Roman letter, some Italic. Woodcut printer's device to t-p, depicting Christ with the Samaritan woman at the well, fine woodcut initials and head-pieces. One or two later ms. marginal notes. Very… light waterstaining, mostly marginal, to first few leaves and index. Small wormhole to t-p, not affecting text. A very good, clean copy in contemp. vellum, a little soiled, fore-edges chewed, lacking ties, in modern box. First French edition (translated from the Latin De sanitate, faecunditatae et morbis mulierum of the same year) of this gynaecological handbook by Jean Liébault (c.1535-1596), doctor and agronomist. It was one of the very first vernacular works, designed for the laywoman, about the female physical condition. Liébault was born in Dijon but moved to Paris to study medicine, where he became a successful doctor, highly esteemed by both colleagues and patients. He married Nicole Estienne, daughter of the great Parisian printer Charles Estienne (1504-1564), who had himself studied medicine under Jacob Sylvius alongside the young Vesalius. Liébault completed and translated his father-in-law's Praedium rusticum into French as La maison rustique (1564); a translation of Gesner's Quatres livres des secrets de médecine followed in 1573. Trois livres de la santé was the first of two works on feminine health and beauty he published in 1582: De l'ornement & beautez des Femmes is advertised in the present work. Madame Liébault, a noted femme des lettres, was herself the author of Misères de la femme mariée, mises en forme de stances, and the manuscript Apologie pour les femmes, contre ceux qui en médisent. She predeceased her husband by some years; the contemporary diarist Pierre de L'Estoile records that Liébault died suddenly, after sitting down to rest on a stone in the rue Gervais-Laurent. Liébault's introduction to the present work laments the infinite number of maladies which accompany any person through his or her life, 'mais plus griefues en affliction tormentent le corps de la femme comme celuy de l'homme'. Woman, he takes care to emphasise, 'n'est animant mutile ny imparfaict, mais foible & maladif'. His work describes and suggests causes and remedies - often more than one - for a range of gynaecological complaints, in chronological order from childhood to motherhood; Liébault does not advise on the maladies of women beyond child-bearing age. Young girls, he notes, may be subject to nervous illnesses, nausea, headache and neuralgia. He deals with menstruation, venereal disease and various renal and gastro-intestinal problems, before proceeding to the subject of conception and childbirth, which occupies the greatest portion of the book. Obesity, male and female, is listed among the causes of infertility; common birth defects are described, along with less common ones such as hermaphroditism. Alongside a discussion of family resemblance in young children (with a gentle reminder that even animals and plants have an urge to reproduce in their own image), Liébault also addresses the question of when a child receives its soul. Of particular interest is the chapter devoted to the performance of caesarean section, which, given the high mortality rate, is advised only as a last resort: the first modern caesarean section which the mother is known to have survived had been performed as recently as 1500. Liébault concludes with advice on the treatment of the newborn and the new mother. The work contains a detailed table of contents and index, and a brief list of errata. BM STC Fr. 266; Brunet III, 1074; Wellcome I, 3800; Durling 2959 (attributed to Giovanni Marinelli); not in Adams, Heirs of Hippocrates, Osler, Garrison and Morton or Erdman. French.

Titlepage + [6]pp "to the reader" & "instructions"] + 362pp [recte 658]. The pages are uniformly lightly tanned with some pale foxing. There is a needle sized hole in the lower middle part of the pages up to page 36 but this does not prevent reading the text. Also a neat "repair" to two margins on the verso of the titlepage however this seems unecessay as there are no tears to any edge of this page! There are 5 other marginal repairs none of which touch any text. Presumably these were all done by Rudolf Jager from Bremen who added endpapers with his date of binding given as 1930.
