Written by Sir James Lemon, who was the borough surveyor in Southampton, where he set about improving the sewerage system in the town, and later became the mayor of the town. Many times since my retirement from active work friends have suggested that I should write my recollections of Southampton as it was when I became Borough Engineer forty-four years ago, and to add my impressions of the progress of events since that time .
