Condición: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (New, Hardcover, 2018). (1618) 2018 new edition. 8vo (166 x 248mm). Ppxiv,118. Colour paintings by David Rampling. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. Edition limited to 250 numbered copies. Fine in dust-wrapper. Numbered copy from an edition of 250 copies. A transcription of Symon Latham's second treatise on falconry, accompanied by some excellent full-page paintings by David Rampling. The book has a second title-page which follows the introductory material. This gives the title as: "Latham's New and Second Book of Falconry. (Concerning the training up of all hawks that were unmentioned in his first book of the Haggard Falcon and Ger Falcon, formerly printed. By Symon Latham. Originally published in London in 1618." "For a very great deal of his falconry life Bob has admired and put into practice, where possible, the writings of Symon Latham, particularly where passage and haggard falcons are concerned. He has always felt that many more falconers would do so if the Elizabethan English, in which Latham was originally printed, were easier to fathom and read. This desire to see Latham reach a wider audience of longwingers grew stronger over the years. Eventually it came about that thought became action and so began a literal labour of love to transcribe the work and thereby bring it to a larger number of falconers. Symon Latham was undoubtedly a highly skilled falconer who fully understood the requirements needed to bring a passage or haggard falcon to the field in tip top mental as well as physical condition. His remarks on matters such as putting a hawk up for the moult or drawing a hawk from the moult and enseaming it are as relevant today as when they were written over four hundred years ago." . …

B/w photographs, illustrations. Commentary signed by David Horobin. Red cloth decorated in black & gilt. Two volumes. Fine unread copies in slipcase. Edition limited to 100 sets, signed by David Horobin. Latham's Faulconry, or The Faulcon's Lure and Cure. A facsimile of the 1633 combined volume of Latham's Falconry, together with an extensive and learned chapter-by-chapter commentary on Latham's work. With a Foreword by Roger Upton. "Although almost 400 years old, Latham's expertise in conditioning hawks in order to get the best performance is something the commentator believes is still of great relevance today. Latham's own view was that this knowledge, passed from generation to generation by word of mouth, was discounted in his day, hence his desire to write it down for future generations. However, falconry's decline shortly after Latham's death meant that few falconers since have used such techniques and the expense of obtaining Latham's work ever since has meant that his methods are still relatively unknown save for being championed by those who have accessed, deciphered and put into practice the original text. Since 17th century language makes Latham's message more difficult to determine today, the chapter-by-chapter commentary attempts to interpret Latham's methodology for the modern practitioner alongside the scarce original text in facsimile. Notes on Latham himself, based on original research, plus material contextualising his world and work are also included." .…

Formerly part 2 of STC 15269.'Simon Latham (d. 1649?), writer on falconry. '. Latham acknowledged that he was introduced to falconry by Henry Sadleir of Eversley, the third son of Sir Ralph Sadleir of Standon, master of the hawks, and that he wrote about falconry in response to the suggestion of a friend. He claimed no literary skill and indeed the verses which he included in his treatise are somewhat crude. His treatise, Latham's Falconry, or, The Faulcons Lure and Cure in Two Books appeared in two parts in 1614 and 1618 and was subsequently reissued in 1633, 1658, and 1665. Unlike many examples of the genre, it was original, practical, and of lasting value. Although he referred in passing to Geoffrey Turbeville, he claimed correctly that his book did not draw on traditional printed sources. The first part was a highly specialized study of how to train the haggard peregrine, that is, a falcon which has been trapped as an adult as distinct from one taken from the nest before it can fly. This was followed by a more conventional review of methods to prevent and treat disease in hawks and the discussion was extended to include goshawks, sparrowhawks, and lanner falcons.' ODNB.
