Ranging from Late Antiquity through the early modern Confessional Age, it does not simply recount acts of violence - it explores their structure, rules, and meaning within the societies that enacted and narrated them. Bringing together interdisciplinary contributions from historians, philologists and literary scholars, the book reveals how violence was embedded in the cultural codes of its time: not just as spontaneous brutality but as performative, ritualised and often rule-governed action. The essays examine a broad spectrum of cases - from Roman show executions and early medieval regicide to Norse saga violence, crusader atrocities, and gendered punishment in medieval didactic literature. Each case becomes a lens for understanding how violence could forge group identity, enforce political power, articulate religious conflict or encode social anxieties. Topics include the theatrical staging of martyrdom, disciplinary uses of domestic violence in literary texts, politicised framing of 'barbarian' invaders, and conflicted ideals of chivalric restraint in Arthurian romance. Especially compelling is the treatment of 'communities of violence' - groups bound by shared transgression, whose cohesion often relied more on internal codes and ritualised aggression than on formal institutions. The volume also explores how violence is retrospectively framed - whether to justify, mourn, condemn, or mythologise it. This book will appeal to scholars and curious readers in medieval and early modern history, literary studies, legal anthropology, and political theology. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge von Mitgliedern der Gießener DFG Forschergruppe 'Gewaltgemeinschaften' und von Kooperationspartnern aus dem In- und Ausland analysieren an markanten Beispielen aus der Kultur-, Sozial- und Literaturgeschichte von der Spätantike bis zum konfessionellen Zeitalters das sich in unterschiedlichen Kontexten immer wieder neu formierende Verhältnis zwischen Regeln und Gewalt.
