Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. East Asia is without question a region of huge economic, political and security significance. Asian Security and the Rise of China offers a comprehensive overview and assessment of the international politics of the Asia-Pacific since the end of the Cold War, seeking to address the overarching question of how we can most convincingly explain the central dynamics of Asia's international relations. Via a realist perspective on the dynamics and frictions associated with accommodating the rise of powerful states, this timely book addresses the core issue in contemporary Asian politics: the rise of China. The contributors expertly evaluate China's rise and the impact it has had on the dynamics of regional relations in North East and South East Asia. They demonstrate that China's economic development and its regional and international ambition increasingly conflict with the existing consensus-based regional arrangements such as the ASEAN Regional Forum and the East Asian Summit mechanism. As a consequence, smaller states in the region increasingly resort to hedging and balancing strategies in an attempt to mitigate Chinese hegemony. This leaves the region in the grip of a complex and potentially destabilizing security dilemma. The book offers a compelling analysis of the problem that China presents for its region that will enlighten undergraduate students of regional political studies and international relations. Postgraduate and Masters students on courses addressing East and South East Asia will also find plenty of information in this invaluable book.

Añadir al carritoHard Cover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. First Edition. While much has been published on Khmer civilization immediately preceding and during the Angkor period, the origins of this culture, deep in the Mekong Delta, remain relatively obscure. The results of initial explorations by French colonial archaeologists in the first half of the twentieth century were published in detail between 1959 and 1963 in editions which are now difficult to obtain. Interrupted by geopolitical factors until 1975, Vietnamese, Cambodian and foreign archaeologists have been active in this region since; however, aside from papers in specialized archaeological monographs, little has been published in western languages on the remarkable cultural remains that have been uncovered. The pre-Khmer culture of Fu Nan played an important role in maritime trade in southeast Asia as early as the first centuries of the Common Era. Abundant evidence exists for wide trade links within the region, with South Asia and extending as far as the Mediterranean. Chinese annals also contain tantalizing references to the kingdom of Fu Nan, now largely unknown, despite its pivotal role as the precursor and early foundation of the Khmer culture. In this book, seven authorities on this rich early civilization describe its material remains, including architecture, sculpture, metalwork, jewelry and pottery, as well as trade wares which include, among many other riches, Roman coins. This important contribution to the art history of mainland Southeast Asia will be of interest to all who have marveled at the remains of the Khmers and Angkor, and who have pondered on the origins of these rich and powerful kingdoms. 174 pp, 93 colour and 2 b&w plates, 9 drawings, 6 maps, bibliography, index. Size: A4.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fair. Verschmutzung / Wasserschaden; Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. Pp. ix, 163; 9 maps and plan views, 100 color photos and drawings. This hardcover first edition features original brown boards with gilt lettering on the spine and a color pictorial dust jacket. The dust jacket flap highlights the obscurity of the origins of Khmer civilization, particularly in the Mekong Delta, despite extensive publications on the Angkor period. Initial explorations by French colonial archaeologists in the early 20th century yielded detailed findings published between 1959 and 1963, now hard to find. After a hiatus due to geopolitical issues until 1975, archaeologists from Vietnam, Cambodia, and abroad have continued to investigate the region, yet little has been published in Western languages about the significant cultural artifacts discovered. The pre-Khmer culture of Fu Nan was crucial in Southeast Asia's maritime trade as early as the Common Era, with evidence of extensive trade links across the region, South Asia, and even the Mediterranean. Chinese records reference the largely unknown kingdom of Fu Nan, which played a vital role in the development of Khmer culture. Seven experts explore the material remains of this civilization, including architecture, sculpture, metalwork, jewelry, pottery, and trade goods, such as Roman coins. This work significantly contributes to the art history of mainland Southeast Asia and will captivate those interested in the Khmer and Angkor legacies. No ownership marks.
