"The present work, which is the result of the third, or Northampton Excersion.is more limited in its scope, but more complete in execution in regard to the matter of which it treats. It deals chiefly with a single portion of a Church - namely, its main interior wall and arches. It presents, however, with scarcely an exception, the Ground-story of the Nave of the whole of the Churches visited during this excursion, together with, in each case, the whole of its ornamental detail. "As these illustrations are, with the exception of those of the carved work, all measured drawings, executed with much care and minuteness, and as they are arranged, as nearly as possible, in chronological order, they afford to the architectural student a valuable means of comparative study, by which important lessons may be learned, not only as to the construction and proportions of buildings in their main features, but as to the progress of Art through the several Periods to which they belong, in the ornamental details with which these main features were clothed, and notably so with repsect to those four chief members - the Pier-Arch, the Pier, and its Capital and Base, which in Church-building are such important elements of the design." - p. xiii. The bookplate belonged to Charles Grant Ellis (1920-2006), b. Sagamore, Massachusetts; d. Punta Gorda, Florida. He was a collector of antique rugs, wrote several books on the subject, and owned one of the finest collections in the United States. During WWII he served in the Army 700th Corp of Engineers working on the Burma Road. After the war he completed his degree in Civil Engineering, and became an avid collector of antique books on architecture.…
