While discussing the educational progress, it provides emphasis on agrarian migration to Malabar in the second half of twentieth century for the general and higher education development of Malabar. This study will be a timely and valuable reference material for researchers, educationists, educational planners and administrators in India. The experience of Malabar is a pointer to the fact that educational progress can be achieved by the combined effort of government and private agencies with the active public involvement. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: An ardent academician, K. S. Mathew has several degrees in his credit including a Doctorate in IndoPortuguese History for which he worked two years in Portugal as the fellow of the International Service of Gulbenkian Foundation. Following his service as the Reader in the Dept. of History, M S University of Baroda, he was appointed head of the Department of History at the Central University of Hyderabad and later at the Pondicherry Central University. The University Grants Commission selected him as an Eminent Professor and honoured him with the National Fellowship award. He was one of the founder members of Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) and a member of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). He also served as visiting Fellow/Professor, Wisconsin University, USA, under Fulbright Fellowship; University of Ottawa, Canada; Institute d' Historie, Universite Michel de Montaigne BordeauxIII, DAAD(Germany) at Heidelberg University and Maison de Sciences de I' Homme, Paris. In 2003, he founded Institute for Research in Social Sciences and Humanities (IRISH), which was recognized as a research centre by Kannur University and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Dr. K. S. Mathew has guided 19 doctoral theses, completed 14 research projects and published 24 books and 105 research articles in various national and international Publications.Dr. Joshy Mathew (b. 1977) teaches in the Department of History, Pazhassiraja College, Pulpally, Wayanad, Kerala. He has secured Second Rank in his Maters Degree in History from the University of Calicut and obtained Ph. D. from Kannur University. He has done significant research in the areas of agrarian migration, educational development, tribal issues in Kerala. He is the author of the book Tradition, Migration and Transformation. Hardcover. Condición: New. This work is an attempt to understand the complexities of the environmental history of Kerala from ancient till the modern period. A major transformation in the environment of Kerala happened with the British colonial rule. They introduced a new forest policy, which collected maximum timber from the We…stern Ghats for further advancement in the British empire. Colonial forest policies were almost similar in the colonial district of Malabar and the princely states of Cochin and Travancore. They were engaged in mono-crop plantations in the ecologically fragile hills and game hunting in the forest regions of Kerala. Later agrarian migration inside Travancore and Cochin, and the large-scale settlement of people in Malabar from Central Travancore also drastically changed the land use pattern in Kerala. The 'Grow More Food' campaign of the government in the post-independent period and other support of the government and non-governmental agencies assisted small scale farmers to reclaim the uncultivated land in the highlands for the extensive expansion of agriculture. However, the environment of Kerala also underwent drastic changes due to the urbanization process. The state began to experience environmental crisis with the great flood in Munnar in 1924. The establishment of forest-based industries, and the subsequent deforestation and water pollution also threatened the state's ecological balance. Similarly, the expansion of tourism industry, sand mining, industrial pollution, usage of pesticides and water exploitation also endangered the environment. Moreover, the state also witnessed several movements for the protection of environment in the second half of the twentieth century in order to save Western Ghats, Silent Valley and Athirappally region, which are unparallel in the environmental history of India.
