Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The acclaimed Deaf artist and writer collects decades' worth of material addressing issues of art and advocacyAmerican visual artist and scholar Joseph Grigely (born 1956) here brings together writings, lectures, interviews and documentation of his work spanning 40 years. Deaf since the age of 10, his art and writing have long questioned and made use of various modes of communication--photographs, handwritten notes, lipreading, newspaper headlines, paintings and TV captions--to examine and scrutinize the ableism embedded in cultural and media production.Otherhow interrogates modes of access and analyzes how issues of accessibility and their resolution provide a benefit to everyone, not just the disabled. Chapters devoted to art, access and advocacy underpin the interconnected nature of these issues. Letters of complaint, faxes and emails, unpublished op-eds, exhibition proposals, statements on equality and access: each provides a glimpse into how Grigely's work has been shaped by--or constructed from--the "tangled process" of opening access. The book is rounded out by a series of visual inventories: collections of images that document failures of access or, in the case of the obituaries, highlight those who had a disability or were activists working to establish greater access for those with disabilities. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition, 2016. 223 pages. Book measures 6.75 x 9.5inches. This book follows Joseph Grigely s exhibition The Gregory Battcock Archive, which was first exhibited in 2009 with iterations being shown at the Whitney Biennial in 2014, the Grazer Kunstverein in 2015/16, Kunstverein in Hamburg in 2016, and Marian Goodman Gallery, London, in 2016. Gregory Battcock (1937 1980, US) was a New York based artist who gave up his practice as a painter to become an art critic; he wrote on Minimalism, Conceptual art, video art, and performance, and generally championed artists pushing the boundaries and definitions of contemporary art. On Christmas Day in 1980 Battcock was found stabbed to death on the balcony of his holiday home in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The murder remains unsolved. In 1992, Joseph Grigely was exploring the recently abandoned facilities of a storage company in the same building as his studio when he found Battcock s archive of manuscripts, photographs, and correspondence strewn throughout the space. After making copies of some of the material, a bulk of the collection was donated to the Archives of American Art. In making the exhibition The Gregory Battcock Archive, Grigely created a labyrinth of vitrines in which photographs, manuscripts, letters, and postcards, are juxtaposed in a way to construct portraits of both Battcock and the 1970s New York art world. The publication Oceans of Love: The Uncontainable Gregory Battcock, expands on this material, and includes a lengthy introduction by Grigely that investigates Battcock s biographical history and his contributions to art. A Fine / As New copy. Binding is square and tight.
