'We zijn hem gelukkig kwijt,' zei minister-president Drees in 1958, toen Sicco Mansholt het ministerie van Landbouw verruilde voor de Europese Commissie. Maar voor Mansholt, die zijn loopbaan begon als landarbeider en die in 1945 de jongste minister was in het kabinet-Schermerhorn/Drees, leek het toen pas te beginnen. Hij maakte zijn reputatie als vasthoudend, hervormings-gezind en sociaal bewogen politicus meer dan waar: Tegen de stroom in en na zware onderhandelingen slaagde hij erin tot een gemeenschappelijk Europees landbouwbeleid te komen. Zijn uiteindelijk doel was de politieke eenwording van Europa. 'Mister Europe', werd hij dan ook genoemd; zijn landbouwpolitiek werd gezien als de motor van de Europese (politieke) integratie. Toch bestond het leven van Mansholt allerminst uit louter successen. Als minister had hij ingestemd met het militair ingrijpen in Nederlands-Indië en als landbouw-commissaris kreeg hij ruzie met Adenauer, De Gaulle en zelfs Nixon, die hem 'that jackass in the European Commission in Brussels' noemde.
