Añadir al carritoVG orig. blue cloth, blue upper edge. 176 p.; 4 halftone pl. from documents; 20 cm. Detailed account of examination and trial 1605-6 of Hugo Gurgeny (b. 1570?) `The Inquisition came to Portugal in 1536. During its existence no word could be printed, and few spoken without the knowledge of a body of men whose business it was to find harm in most things. It was the Comite de Salut Publique, the Ochrans, the Ogpu, the Gestapo and the Star Chamber rolled into one; with the difference that all parties were equally suspect in its eyes and that until its very latter days it was quite incorruptible. It has been estimated that between 1536 and 1821, in Lisbon alone, 355 men and 221 women were burned alive; 6005 men and 4960 women were turtured; besides these 706 men and 546 women died in prison. This calculation is based on surviving documents, and owing to the vicissitudes these have undergone--including two fires, the great earthquake, and the French occupation when the Inquisition was used as administrative headquarters--it is probably well within the mark. There is no record of how many became insane, but it is likely that the percentage was very high. The following is an account of how an English gentleman, of some learning but not much cunning, fought against it for liberty of conscience and the respect of treaties' (p. 11 f.) from his summons and denunciation on 25 August 1605, through his sentence to be burned alive -- headed off by his profession of conversion and recantation -- until his conditional release on 27 June 1609, after which no trace of him survives. The author had full use of the undisturbed original documents, whose facsimiles show the contrast between his initial firm signature against the sprawling letters on his discharge. Binding is Hardcover.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Feminists Researching Gendered Childhoods charts the evolving nature of feminist theory and research methods in childhood studies and the generative potential this holds for researchers, academics and educators to continue to push ideas and practices. The book traces the threads of affect and effect that feminist theories and methodologies have made over time to thinking more, and differently, about gender in childhood. In the wake of the 'new materialist turn' in feminist research, the book sought to address two pressing questions: what is especially new about feminist new materialism, and what is especially feminist about feminist new materialism. These questions are generative, troubling, unsettling and invited the contributors on an adventure that involved re-turning and reconfiguring ideas and practices about gender and childhood. Along with the editors, Jayne Osgood (UK), and Kerry H. Robinson (Australia), five key international feminist scholars, Mindy Blaise (Australia), Bronwyn Davies (Australia), Debbie Epstein (UK), Jen Lyttleton-Smith (UK), and Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw (Canada) collaborated on this book project. Their reflective accounts capture the contribution of their own work and that of their peers, to advancing research practices and theorisations of gender in childhood. Having all approached the study of gendered childhoods in creative and critical ways, these important feminist researchers re-engage and critically reflect on their earlier work alongside their more contemporary contributions to the field. The book is as much about the processes involved in its creation as it about the material/digital end product. The chapters work with both familiar and unfamiliar feminist methodological frameworks that bring affect, materiality and embodiment, as well as textual representations of gender and childhood, into play. The book engages with, and generates artwork, poetry, photographs as a means to grapple with how gender, childhood, family, curriculum and policy have been, and might be researched. The book captures a lively, collaborative, feminist experiment that sought to make space for fresh conceptualisations of gender in childhood. Issues addressed include: social justice and transformative methodologies in childhood research; advancing theoretical perspectives that contribute to fresh understandings of gender in young children's lives; the ways that research into gender in childhood play out in educational agendas; and the specific gender issues perceived critical to address in contemporary childhoods lived in the post-Anthropocene.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Have you ever felt pulled toward something greater but feared the leap? This is your permission slip to trust, let go, and finally colour outside the lines. Standing at the photocopier one lunch break as a primary school teacher, author Jayne Robinson asked herself, "Is this all there is?" That moment set her on a path to radical trust and self-reinvention; she left behind everything familiar and went on a global pilgrimage of self-reclamation, taking her from the streets of London to the stillness of Bali, the beauty of Italy, the jungles of Costa Rica. Along the way, she shed outdated identities, healed old wounds, and remembered who she really is. Blending deeply personal experiences with powerful life lessons, The Freedom Experiment serves as both a mirror and a map, peeling back the curtain of transformation and revealing the inner battles so many face. It offers a path to breaking free, reclaiming your truth, and creating an authentic soul-led life. Through her journey of self-discovery, Jayne challenges everything you believe about success, self-worth, fear, and identity, proving that the life you long for isn't found in playing it safe but in daring to embrace the unknown and face your demons.
