During his time of service, McKnight penned dozens of emotion-filled letters, primarily to his wife, Samaria, revealing the struggles of an entire family both before and during the war. This collection of more than one hundred letters provides in-depth accounts of several battles in Kentucky and Tennessee, such as the Cumberland Gap and Knoxville campaigns that were pivotal events in the Western Theater. The letters also vividly respond to General John Hunt Morgan's raid through Ohio and correct claims previously published that McKnight was part of the forces chasing Morgan. By all accounts Morgan did stay for a period of time at McKnight's home in Langsville during his raid through Ohio, much to McKnight's horror and humiliation, but McKnight was in Kentucky at the time. Tragically, McKnight was killed in action nearly a year later during an engagement with Morgan's men near Cynthiana, Kentucky.…

Much of the change uses technology to improve command and control (C2) of military forces. The end state gives the commander the ability to command a more flexible and adaptive force. Since the early 1990s, the US Air Force has focused much of its effort on command and control networks to enable centralized control and decentralized execution. The Air Operations Center used in Desert Storm was a major step towards improved C2 in the USAF. In the late 1990s a wing level command and control center was developed. This center, now the Installation Command Center (referred to as the Installation Operations Center (IOC) in this paper) is being incorporated into Air Force doctrine. The research question focuses on what the installation operations center provides to the deployed commander. Using doctrine and history as a baseline and fourteen criteria for measurement, the installation operations center greatly enhances the deployed commander's ability to integrate the unit mission into the joint fight. The installation operations center provides the commander with a tailorable command and control center, with better trained personnel, greater flexibility in personnel to run the center, significantly better situational awareness for local and area of responsibility operations, and also improves information sharing and integration vertically and horizontally. The IOC will substantially increase the deployed commander's combat capability. …

Neuware - 'The 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review Report (QDR) directed the Air Force (AF) to 'develop a new land-based, penetrating long-range strike [LRS] capability to be fielded by 2018.' To meet this directive, the AF began a capabilities-based planning effort that is primarily ahistoric. The paper presented here uses case studies of the B-52 and B-1 to suggest attributes the next generation LRS should incorporate. Although the military is often accused of fighting the last war, the USAF should not ignore lessons from the past. Historical reflection often helps identify trends. This knowledge, combined with capabilities based planning, offers the best guide for future aircraft design. The best source for LRS historical trend analysis comes from the B-52 and the B1. The B-52 is over fifty years old and the B-1 over twenty years old. Although designed for a very different threat, both bombers have played a significant role in the Global War on Terrorism. Additionally, both have been considered for retirement during their service, yet today the Chief of Staff of the Air Force considers them so useful that he 'flew the wings off them.' Identifying why the bomber force has adapted so well should provide valuable lessons to incorporate into the next generation LRS design. The study examines six operations spanning 1945-2007 for historical lessons. This period of time covers nuclear concerns of the Cold War, major combat operations in Vietnam, as well as operations such as Desert Storm, which some experts claim represented a revolution in military affairs. Amazingly, both bombers have been incredibly useful in every conflict studied. The analysis of the B-52 and B-1 case studies reveals eight common core attributes: 1) all-weather, 2) flexible weapons carriage, 3) heavy gross weight, 4) heavy payload, 5) high-altitude, 6) high-speed, 7) long-range, and 8) survivability.
