Cloth. Condición: Very Good. The significant first work of the Reverend James Hervey, beautifully illustrated throughout. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title and four further plates. Lacking two to four plates. The significant first work of the Reverend James Hervey, including the popular "Meditations among the Tombs", inspired by Robert Boyle's Occasional Reflexions on various Subjects. Penned in Hervey's characteristic lyrical style, the text was praised by William Blake, who painted Epitome of James Hervey's Meditations among the Tombs after this work. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Inscription from a previous owner to the front free endpaper, dated 1937. Externally, smart with slight bumping and rubbing, leading to minor loss of cloth and edge wear. Spine and boards subtly faded with a couple of odd marks. Internally, firmly bound. A fairly bright and clean edition, especially for its age, lightly age toned with scattered spotting, heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good. Not Stated (ilustrador). book.…

The main text incorporates both of the C18th volumes, Volume I: Earthly Mortality & Beauty, which includes Mediations among the Tombs, which is considered a cornerstone foundational prose text for the "Graveyard School" of poetry and early Gothic literature, and Volume II: Celestial and Seasonal Wonders.…
