Paperback. Condición: New. This long overdue biography of the nation's first African American woman judge elevates Jane Matilda Bolin to her rightful place in American history as an activist, integrationist, jurist, and outspoken public figure in the political and professional milieu of New York City before the onset of the modern Civil Rights movement. Bolin was appointed to New York City's domestic relations court in 1939 for the first of four ten-year terms. When she retired in 1978, her career had extended well beyond the courtroom. Drawing on archival materials as well as a meeting with Bolin in 2002, historian Jacqueline A. McLeod reveals how Bolin parlayed her judicial position to impact significant reforms of the legal and social service system in New York. Beginning with Bolin's childhood and educational experiences at Wellesley and Yale, Daughter of the Empire State chronicles Bolin's relatively quick rise through the ranks of a profession that routinely excluded both women and African Americans. Deftly situating Bolin's experiences within the history of black women lawyers and the historical context of high-achieving black New Englanders, McLeod offers a multi-layered analysis of black women's professionalization in a segregated America. Linking Bolin's activist leanings and integrationist zeal to her involvement in the NAACP, McLeod analyzes Bolin's involvement at the local level as well as her tenure on the organization's national board of directors. An outspoken critic of the discriminatory practices of New York City's probation department and juvenile placement facilities, Bolin also co-founded, with Eleanor Roosevelt, the Wiltwyck School for boys in upstate New York and campaigned to transform the Domestic Relations Court with her judicial colleagues. McLeod's careful and highly readable account of these accomplishments inscribes Bolin onto the roster of important social reformers and early civil rights trailblazers.…

Hardcover. Condición: Good. [Interesting provenance: From the private library of renowned historian, Philip D. Morgan.] Hardcover and dust jacket. Shelf wear. Binding slightly cocked. Contains Philip Morgan's personal notes through out. "The essays assembled in Crossing Boundaries reflect the international dimensions, commonalities, and discontinuities in the histories of diasporan communities of color. People of African descent in the New World (the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean) share a common set of experiences: domination and resistance, slavery and emancipation, the pursuit of freedom, and struggle against racism. No unitary explanation can capture the varied experiences of black people in diaspora. Knowledge of individual societies is illuminated by the study and comparison of other cultural histories. This volume, which grew out of the Comparative History of Black People in Diaspora Symposium held at Michigan State University, elaborates the profound relationship between curriculum and pedagogy." From the professional library of Dr. Philip D. Morgan, a professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. Morgan specializes in the African-American experience, the history of slavery, the early Caribbean, and the study of the early Atlantic world. Morgan is the author of more than 14 books on Colonial America and African American history. He has won both the Bancroft Prize and the Frederick Douglass Prize for his book Slave Counterpoint: Black Culture in the Eighteenth-Century Chesapeake and Lowcountry (1998).…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Now in paperback! Crossing Boundaries Comparative History of Black People in Diaspora Edited by Darlene Clark Hine and Jacqueline McLeod Suggests new paradigms for the study of Blacks in diaspora. 'The 18 papers in this volume are original, clearly written, and of consistently high quality. Organized in four parts-'Comparative Diaspora Historiography,' 'Identity and Culture,' 'Domination and Resistance,' and 'Geo-Social History and the Atlantic World'-these essays complement each other in a way that makes the whole even more valuable than the sum of the parts.' -Choice The essays assembled in Crossing Boundaries reflect the international dimensions, commonalities, and discontinuities in the histories of diasporan communities of color. People of African descent in the New World (the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean) share a common set of experiences: domination and resistance, slavery and emancipation, the pursuit of freedom, and struggle against racism. No single explanation can capture the varied experiences of Black people in diaspora. Crossing Boundaries probes differences embedded in Black ethnicities and helps to discover and to weave into a new understanding the threads of experience, culture, and identity across diasporas. Contributors include Allison Blakely, Kim Butler, Frederick Cooper, George Fredrickson, David Barry Gaspar, Jack P. Green, Thomas Holt, Earl Lewis, Elliott Skinner, and Rosalyn Terborg-Penn. Darlene Clark Hine, John A. Hannah Professor of History at Michigan State University, is author of Hine Sight: Black Women and the Re-Construction of American History (Indiana University Press); co-author of A Shining Thread of Hope: The History of Black Women in America and The African American Odyssey; and co-editor of More Than Chattel: Black Women and Slavery in the Americas and A Question of Manhood: A Reader in Black Men's History and Masculinity (both Indiana University Press). Jacqueline McLeod is Assistant Professor of History at Western Illinois University. She holds a J.D. degree from the University of Toledo College of Law.
