Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the evolving role of Gewerbe, or trade societies, in the political and social development of German cities in the late Middle Ages. The author argues that Gewerbe were not simply economic institutions, but also played a crucial role in shaping urban society and culture. The book draws on a wide range of sources, including guild records, city charters, and chronicles, to provide a rich and nuanced account of the history of Gewerbe in this period. The author explores the ways in which Gewerbe regulated trade and industry, provided social welfare for their members, and participated in urban politics. The book also examines the relationship between Gewerbe and the state, and how this relationship changed over time. The author concludes that Gewerbe were a vital part of the fabric of German urban life in the late Middle Ages, and that their decline in the early modern period was a major factor in the transformation of German society.
