Watercolour described by the auctioneers as a late nineteenth or early twentieth century view of the Lake District. The watercolour has been laid down and on the backing board is the name S. Coleman, in pencil. I have not found an artist of that name whose style and dates would appear to match that of this work. In a hand-ruled and colour wash bevel cut mount which, like the painting itself, is in very good condition. Mount window 370 x 270 mm; overall size 495 x 400 mm. 49.5 x 40 cm.

This volume, along with other books of the period, came from the family estate of Sir Frederick Treves (15 February 1853 - 7 December 1923) a prominent British surgeon, and an expert in anatomy. Platt & Hall | New Boswell Court | Carey Street', with Halls signature ('B Hall' between two horizontal lines) at bottom left. The letter itself reads: 'Gentlemen/ | I have just received a letter from Mess: Prothero & Philipps who state that you will call here to know my intention respecting the Petition presented against my return. I have now determined on defending it & as I may probably be from home when you call I send this not to your office'. Hall oversaw the later stages of the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament, including the installation of the 13.8-tonne hour bell, "Big Ben", in the clock tower. He was a tall man and many attribute its name to him.
