Den größten Raum nimmt daher die vergleichende Beschreibung besonders der morphologischen, aber auch der phonologischen und lexikalischen Züge der Dialekte ein. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass die überaus zahlreichen Dialekte kein wirkliches Kontinuum über den europäischen Raum bilden, sondern sich gut in Familien gliedern lassen (Nördliche, Nordöstliche, Nördliche Zentrale, Südliche Zentrale, Vlach, Südbalkan I und Südbalkan II), die mehr oder weniger homogen sind. Es ist ein durch die Mobilität der Sprecher bedingtes Spezifikum der Sprache, dass diese Familien nicht immer räumlich voneinander getrennt sind, sondern sich teilweise geographisch überlappen. In Ansätzen wird versucht, die Geschichte des Romani bzw. die Ausbreitung der Stämme in Europa zu rekonstruieren.Dem Textband ist ein Atlasband beigegeben, der genau auf den Textband abgestimmt ist. Es finden sich drei Typen von Karten: parallel gestalteteNordeuropa- und Südosteuropa-Karten sowie Karten von Gesamt-Europa, auf denen die sprachlichen Phänomene dargestellt sind.
