Then, even more than today, control of the country depended on keeping the twin great rivers of the Tigris and Euphrates open. This book narrates the work undertaken by the officers and men of the Inland Water Transport (IWT) assigned to deliver supplies to the large British army in Mesopotamia by water. So successful were they that, by the end of the war, the river system, backed up by railways, was taking nearly 3,000 tons a day in a fleet of 2,000 craft up to 500 miles upriver from the port of Basra - then as now the main British base in the region. As a result of this miracle of organisation, the enemy was driven from Kut to Baghdad to Mosul. If only it was like that today! Original gilt-titled brown cloth 16 x 23cm. Printed at the Mayflower Press in Plymouth. xx, 252pp + approx 96 plates including b/w photos, and folding sheets including frontispiece Sketch Map of Lower Mesopotamia, distance table, plan of the IWT Dock at Basrah, Administration organigram, and diagram illustrating tonnage carried upriver during Sept 1916 to 11 Nov 1918. Covers very good. Interiors generally near fine with some foxing, closed tears, and creasing. Pencil underline to p55 (see below). Provenance - the signature and neat inscription of W. Taylor to the front pastedown states his role in the campaign and in illustrating this book: "Sgt. W. Taylor 265375 IWT RE / Mesopotamia Exp Force 1916-19 / In charge of Photography Fleet Registration Office / IWT RE Hd Qts. Basrah / Photographs reproduced herein / By Sgt. W. Taylor". Below this is his address in Worksop. This is William Taylor (1891-1978), the Son in Ezra Taylor & Son, a Worksop-based firm of photographers. The sentence underlined on p55 about the Fleet Registration Office stating "A photographer and complete set of apparatus was also borne on the strength of this establishment", thus relates to him. This office, initiated in Sept 1916, was responsible for technical registration of the fleet, checking craft specifications, recording allocation and positions, hiring and chartering, and storing and registering all IWT drawings. Its Drawing Office recorded structural changes to craft, and did drawing and tracing work for other departments. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).…
