Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition white boards with black spine lettering contained in an as new condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preliminary Page Quote by Frederick Douglass; Author Dedication; 1776 Unites Mission Statement; Foreword by Dr. Lucas E. Morel; Introduction: The Crucial Voice of "1776" by Robert L. Woodson, Sr.; Biographies of Contributing Authors; Endnotes and Acknowledgments. " "An indispensable corrective to the falsified version of black history presented by The 1619 Project, radical activists, and money-hungry "diversity consultants." In the rush to redefine the place of black Americans in contemporary society, many radical activists and academics have mounted a campaign to destroy traditional American history and replace it with a politicized version that few would recognize. According to the new radical orthodoxy, the United States was founded as a racist nation -- and everything that has happened throughout our history must be viewed through the lens of the systemic oppression of black people. Rejecting this false narrative, a collection of the most prominent and respected black scholars and thinkers has come together to correct the record and tell the true story of black Americans in all its complexity, diversity of experience, and poignancy. Collectively, they paint a vivid picture of black people living the grand American experience, however bumpy the road may be along the way. But rather than a people apart, blacks are woven into the united whole that makes this nation unique in history." -- from the rear outer jacket. "1776 Unites represents a nonpartisan and intellectually diverse alliance of writers, thinkers, and activists focused on solutions to our country's greatest challenges in education, culture, and upward mobility. We acknowledge that racial discrimination exists - and work toward diminishing it. But we dissent from contemporary groupthink and rhetoric about race, class, and American history that defames our national heritage, divides our people, and instills helplessness among those who already hold within themselves the grit and resilience to better their lot in life. 1776 Unites maintains a special focus on voices in the black community who celebrate black excellence, reject victimhood culture and showcase the millions of black Americans who have prospered by embracing the founding ideals of America. We are intellectuals, journalists, entrepreneurs, and grassroots activists, celebrating the progress America has made, the resilience of its people, and our future together. We seek decisive action in restoring our people's confidence and advancing the cause of actual justice in the face of hostile messages that degrade the spiritual, moral, and political foundations of our nation." -- from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Community activist Robert L. "Bob" Woodson has devoted his career to helping low-income people transcend their impoverished conditions. Woodson has used his own rise from poverty to assist him as the founder and president of the National Center for Neighborhood Enterprise (NCNE). Woodson received a prestigious "Genius Grant" from the MacArthur Foundation in 1990. He sits on the boards of the American Association of Enterprise Zones, the Commission on National and Community Service, and the Commonwealth Foundation. Woodson has also written extensively on issues of poverty and empowerment. Shea, Tiffani (cover design) (ilustrador).…

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. 382 pages. Illustrations. List of Contributors, Index. Robin David Stewart Higham (June 20, 1925 - August 27, 2015) was a British-American historian, specializing in aerospace and military history, who also served as a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Higham received a Ph.D. in 1957 from Harvard with a dissertation on the development of aviation in Great Britain. For the next six years, until 1963, he was an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, where he was co-founder of the National Security Seminar of Duke University and. University of North Carolina. In 1963, he became a professor at Kansas State University. He became professor emeritus there in 1999. Though he described himself as a "historical generalist" in a 1998 interview, Higham's primary publications were on the subject of aeronautics, especially military-scientific aspects.[ He did, however, also write extensively on geopolitics in general. In 1977, he founded Sunflower University Press, which existed until 2005 and published books on military science and military history. He was editor of Military Affairs (now The Journal of Military History) from 1968 to 1988 and of Aerospace Historian from 1970 to 1988. He was also the editor of the Journal of the West beginning in 1976. Stephen J. Harris is the chief historian for the Directorate of History and Heritage at the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, Canada. He coauthored The Crucible of War: The Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force. According to Robin Higham and Stephen J. Harris, "Flight has been part of the human dream for aeons, and its military application has likely been the dark side of that dream for almost as long." In the twentieth century, this dream and its dark side unfolded as the air forces of the world went to war, bringing destruction and reassessment with each failure. Why Air Forces Fail examines the complex, often deep-seated, reasons for the catastrophic failures of the air forces of various nations. Higham and Harris divide the air forces into three categories of defeat: forces that never had a chance to win, such as Poland and France; forces that started out victorious but were ultimately defeated, such as Germany and Japan; and finally, those that were defeated in their early efforts yet rose to victory, such as the air forces of Britain and the United States. The contributing authors examine the complex causes of defeats of the Russian, Polish, French, Arab, British, Italian, German, Argentine, and American air services. In all cases, the failures stemmed from deep, usually prewar factors that were shaped by the political, economic, military, and social circumstances in the countries. Defeat also stemmed from the anticipation of future wars, early wartime actions, and the precarious relationship between the doctrine of the military leadership and its execution in the field. Anthony Christopher Cain's chapter on France's air force, l'Armée de l'Air, attributes France's loss to Germany in June 1940 to a lack of preparation and investment in the air force. One major problem was the failure to centralize planning or coordinate a strategy between land and air forces, which was compounded by aborted alliances between France and countries in eastern Europe, especially Poland and Czechoslovakia. In addition, the lack of incentives for design innovation in air technologies led to clashes between airplane manufacturers, laborers, and the government, a struggle that resulted in France's airplanes' being outnumbered by Germany's more than three to one by 1940. Complemented by reading lists and suggestions for further research, Why Air Forces Fail provides groundbreaking studies of the causes of air force defeats.…

"In Eyewitness to the Civil War, National Geographic offers you an opportunity to experience the emotional history of this tragic era through the eyes and words of those who were there. A compelling narrative tells the complete history chronologically, starting with a prologue on secession, followed by five chapters organized by year and an epilogue on the difficult period of Reconstruction. To add to the eyewitness experience we pored over thousands of photographs, battle sketches, letters, maps, and artifacts from public and private collections around the country, carefully selecting more than 450 and placing them within the text exactly where key events unfold. Hundreds of quotes further define each critical event. Thirty "Eyewitness" boxes that feature an original letter, first-person account, or diary entry appear chronologically and provide an in-depth view of what life was like for soldiers and citizens. In addition, rare historical maps by Union cartographer Private Robert Knox Sneden are combined with period photographs and art in specially designed "Mapping the War" spreads to give the reader and eyewitness perspective on 11 major battles. Finally, we created sidebars and photo essays on significant topics such as slavery, soldier life, heavy artillery and other equipment, the cavalry, medicine, the role of music, and the assassination of Lincoln. When viewed together, these features, artfully designed and interwoven, add depth to the book, making it ideal to read from cover to cover or just to browse, experiencing a surprise on every page." - Neil Kagan, editor, excerpt from About This Book.…
