The search was neither restricted to a specific time period nor were language restrictions employed. Studies published in peer-reviewed, academic journals as well as books and websites were selected on the basis of 'usefulness' in regards to the research question. After establishing what AA is, the essay examined whether AA works. It found that AA differs substantially in regards to other treatment approaches by it's 'acting into thinking'-philosophy. The efficacy of AA could not be proven by employing a cause-and-effect methodology. Moreover, the complexity of human behaviour as well as the fact that AA is not practised uniformly raises many seemingly unanswerable methodological problems and it remains questionable whether AA treatment and outcomes can be measured by a cause-and-effect method. Testimonies of personal experience as well as for centuries practised human wisdom seem however to suggest that AA does work - for the ones who work the programme, that is.

Culture, this work c…laims, is man-made and tends, on the one hand, to secure the predominant social practises, its function is to stabilise the existing order; on the other hand, it is an expression of what its members aspire to be. The notions of 'Orientalism' (how the West sees the East) and 'Asian values' (how Asia sees herself) are explored before criteria such as rationality, justice, democracy, individual liberty, separation of church and state, and tolerance, that are generally perceived as European, but also as Western, are examined. Despite them having the same roots, European and Western values vary not inconsiderably because they are interpreted (and practised) not in the same way in Europe and in the US. The reason (also for the differences between Eastern and Western values), it is claimed, lies in the politics of power: differences in values are emphasised and thus enforced for political purposes. Furthermore, cultural values, it is argued, are not 'naturally' there, they are constructed ideologies and need to be put back in their place for it is our natural commonalities that (should) essentially matter.

Dabei gab es weder zeitliche noch sprachliche Einschränkungen. Studien in peer-reviewed akademischen Zeitschriften, Büchern und Internetseiten wurden aufgrund ihrer 'Nützlichkeit' berücksichtigt. Die Untersuchung kam zum Schluss, dass sich das Zwölf-Schritte Programm (AA-Programm) durch seine 'acting into thinking'-Philosophie wesentlich von anderen Behandlungen unterscheidet. Seine Wirksamkeit lässt sich jedoch mit einer Ursache-Wirkung-Methodologie nicht nachweisen. Aufgrund der Komplexität menschlichen Verhaltens wie auch der Tatsache, dass das AA-Programm nicht einheitlich praktiziert wird, ist fraglich, ob seine Wirksamkeit mit einer Ursache-Wirkung-Methodologie überhaupt gemessen werden kann. Dabei gab es weder zeitliche noch sprachliche Einschränkungen. Studien in peer-reviewed akademischen Zeitschriften, Büchern und Internetseiten wurden aufgrund ihrer 'Nützlichkeit' berücksichtigt. Die Untersuchung kam zum Schluss, dass sich das Zwölf-Schritte Programm (AA-Programm) durch seine 'acting into thinking'-Philosophie wesentlich von anderen Behandlungen unterscheidet. Seine Wirksamkeit lässt sich jedoch mit einer Ursache-Wirkung-Methodologie nicht nachweisen. Aufgrund der Komplexität menschlichen Verhaltens wie auch der Tatsache, dass das AA-Programm nicht einheitlich praktiziert wird, ist fraglich, ob seine Wirksamkeit mit einer Ursache-Wirkung-Methodologie überhaupt gemessen werden kann. Zeugnisse persönlicher Erfahrungen wie auch während Jahrhunderten praktizierte menschliche Weisheit scheinen jedoch den Schluss nahezulegen, dass das Zwölf-Schritte Programm in der Tat wirksam ist - für diejenigen, die das Programm auch wirklich praktizieren. 24 pp. Deutsch.

The notions of ¿Orientalism¿ (how the West sees the East) and ¿Asian values¿ (how Asia sees herself) are explored before criteria such as rationality, justice, democracy, individual liberty, separation of church and state, and tolerance, that are generally perceived as European, but also as Western, are examined. Despite them having the same roots, European and Western values vary not inconsiderably because they are interpreted (and practised) not in the same way in Europe and in the US. The reason (also for the differences between Eastern and Western values), it is claimed, lies in the politics of power: differences in values are emphasised and thus enforced for political purposes.
