Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Bacchylides (c. 520-450 BC) was one of the nine Greek lyric poets selected as models of this genre by the Alexandrian scholars who first collected and edited their songs in the 3rd century BC. Bacchylides' songs did not survive the end of antiquity, but substantial portions of at least three books have been recovered from papyri found in Egypt. This 2004 book was the first commentary in English since R. C. Jebb's Bacchylides (1905). It aims to introduce the reader to two important areas of Greek choral lyric poetry in which Bacchylides was pre-eminent: songs in praise of individuals (victory odes 3-6 and 11, and enkomia frr. 20A-D), and songs composed for religious festivals (dithyrambs, procession songs, and paeans). Among the most attractive features of his style are the well-balanced formal structure of his poems, and his vivid narrative which is capable of creating scenes of high drama and deep passion.

Añadir al carritoBrill, Leiden (.), 1997. XXVI,381p. Original grey gilt stamped cloth with dust wrappers. Dust wrappers damaged to head spine, and a bit jammed near joints to upper edge. Dust wrappers as well as back cover bit bubbled (caused by jamming?) near fore edge. Still quite a nice copy. Series: Mnemosyne, Supplementa, 167. ?M.?s strong suit is the solid acriby with which textual problems as well as features of Bacchylides? diction (?) are treated. Besides, he has a grip of the iconographical material which is quite exceptional in the field of archaic poetry. He has little time for overall interpretations of the poems (?). But this is balanced by the very extensive treatments of the myths as found in other poetry and on vases. All in all, an indispensable, very reliable tool, for which every reader of Bacchylides will owe a debt of lasting gratitude. The text is definitely improved compared with the Teubner text of 1970. The format of the apparatus is basically the same as the highly idiosyncratic one developed by Snell and continued by M. For this text (?). Let me finish by congratulating M. On this splendid work and by wishing that many scholars will follow his exampled with regard to other lyric poets. He has certainly set a new standard.? (S.R. SLINGS in Mnemosyne, Fourth Series, Vol.52, pp.484-489). From the library of the late Prof. Dr. Ludo De Lannoy.

Bacchylides (c. 520450 BC), like his contemporary Pindar, composed songs of praise for princes and victorious athletes and songs for choral performances at religious festivals. Their stylistic qualities, however, make them more easily accessible than Pindar's. This 2004 selection contains the first commentary in English since 1905. This item is printed on demand.
