Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book documents the transformation of streetcar networks in major American cities from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The author argues that electric streetcars were not only a technological innovation but also a powerful force in shaping the physical, social, and economic fabric of urban America. He explores how streetcar lines expanded into residential areas, facilitating suburbanization and the growth of new communities. The book also sheds light on the struggles between private streetcar companies and municipal governments over control of urban transportation, and discusses the role of streetcars in social and economic inequality, racial segregation, and the rise of mass culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
